Anubis loathed Antei.
The dark storms consumed the planet in a never-ending vortex of decay. Once upon a time, the Dark Hall had been the most prestigious location in the Brotherhood. The grand seat of power upon which only the reigning Grand Master had held the right to sit. Lightning cracked across the sky above like a whip snapping in an empty cavern as thunder roared like a hungry krayt dragon desperate for sustenance. The Force was ever powerful here, the weight of the tragedy of Antei could be felt on the shoulders of those who dared to walk the long-forgotten hallways oncemore. Yet, this was not the reason Anubis hated the Dark Hall, or Antei itself. No, the reason the Umbaran detested this desolate wasteland was the lack of technology. The entire system had been seemingly picked clean. The most advanced piece of equipment in sight was the Sith war droid that tapped along the rugged terrain by the Seer's side. Anubis' cybernetics made Antei look like it came from a time before interstellar travel.
The Brotherhood's newest Regent stood inside the broken hall with a look of disgust bordering on pity for what remained. It was a far cry from the Umbaran's days as a keeper of Antei's holocrons and stood as evidence of the relentless march of time and neglect. Cracks littered the foundations and parts of the ceiling lay on the floor around him. Wild winds howled on the outside as years of dust and neglect piled around without a soul to tend to its care. To Anubis, it was a perfect illustration of an Order long since out of touch with the rest of the Galaxy. Vodo Biask had once told him that power obtained and hoarded by Sith often came at a price, a price that they were only too willing to accept in the pursuit of glory.
What's the point? The Regent pondered. Gaining power just to lose it repeatedly over and over again seemed horribly counterproductive. It was a train of thought he couldn't berate his master over since Vodo got blown into a thousand pieces on Arx by the Collective. Sephtis wanted to come here, the spirit's voice started as nothing more than a whisper in the back of Anubis' mind, but grew louder and louder as days passed. He could feel Sephtis taunting him, luring him in with greater promises of power as if the Regent was the spirit's pet clawing at nibbles. The sound of Anubis' heavy, pained breathing echoed in the chamber as he inspected a fallen spire in the middle of the main hall.
I will succeed where they failed. Anubis thought, believing his obsession with Sith Magic, alchemy and technologies gave him the intellectual edge.
A sacrifice. The dark, protruding voice of Sephtis sounded in his mind. This is the ritual that requires a sacrifice.
The same ritual performed by Grand Master Muz Ashen that left the Antei System in ruins. Some claimed it was the source of the former Grand Master's spike in power, and Anubis wanted it. He craved it as if it was a hunger that refused to be satiated, driving him to sleepless nights in unending pain. There were no secrets that could hide from the Seer for long, and he was willing to do what it took to unlock the mystery for himself. Thankfully, the son of Taldrya still had some connections with his old home.
Suddenly, the loud tapping of heavy boots drew the Regent's attention to the main hall's archway. A tall, heavily armoured man in bright red armor entered, ducking under the partially collapsed entrance. The most striking feature was the golden lightning bolt on his chest. A bold, if somewhat foolhardy design in Anubis' eyes.
"Alright, Anubis. I'm here. I don't know what was so important you had to pull me away from the Doran System, but here I am!" The Mandalorian declared extravagantly.
Anubis didn't respond to the Mandalorian. Nor did he have to. The conflict between the Severian Principate and the Tenexir Revenants presented a golden opportunity. Appius could go missing and no-one would be any the wiser.
The large Umbaran reached out with his right hand and pointed one finger towards the Juggernaut. The Sith War Droid suddenly shuddered to life as it readied the two dual blaster cannons mounted on each arm.
"Wait, what are…" Appius started to say, seeing the danger before the Force screamed through his subconscious. The Mandalorian activated his jetpack and leapt into the air. Bolts of red plasma soared across the Dark Hall like an angry swarm of mynocks, colliding with the ancient architecture. The droid's canons followed the Juggernaut as he arched through the air, the blaster fire toppling unstable pillars as they crashed with heavy slams into the broken ground.
Thankfully for the Proconsul, whilst the droid was certainly strong, it wasn't particularly fast. The Savant outpaced the blaster cannons and landed behind the mechanical entity with a hard thud. Appius wasted no time and retrieved his weapon from his hip. Twin emerald blades snapped into existence as the Mandalorian prepared to permanently retire the war droid. Their descent, however, was halted when Appius' helmet malfunctioned.
The Regent remained where he stood when the fight started. One hand extended as he channeled the Force and weaved it into the electronics in the Savant's helmet. A painful screech erupted from the electronics within said helmet, and Appius hurriedly removed it, tossing it aside before it could damage his hearing permanently. The helmet hit a nearby stone slab and rolled across the floor.
"Gah!" The Juggernaut called out. "What the hell, Anubis!? What is the meaning of this?"
Again, no answer. The Regent simply watched as Hâsk completed its rotation and readied to fire upon its target. Luckily, Appius was one step ahead and reached out with the Force to lift the heavy droid into the air before it could lock on to him. The Juggernaut tossed the large mechanical construct at the Umbaran, who ducked out of the way of the war droid before one of its arms slammed into his head. Hâsk hit the far wall with a hard crash, causing heavy rubble to fall from the ceiling and almost obscure the droid entirely from sight.
"What's the matter? Is the Regent so weak that he has to get a droid to do the fighting for him?" Appius taunted as he pointed his saberstaff at the Umbaran who clenched his fists at his side, seeing his pride and joy being treated like a used huttball. "Or are you so high and mighty now that you can't be bothered?"
Yes... he will do nicely as a sacrifice. Anubis thought.
I agree. Sephtis' voice loomed in the Regent's mind. The Umbaran hid the fact he was going to enjoy dismantling Appius as he summoned his inner darkness to his fingertips. A bolt of white and blue lightning shot out of the Seer's hand towards the Mandalorian, who blocked the attack with one blade of his saberstaff.
"Really!?" The Juggernaut exclaimed, clearly offended. "Alright, if that's how you want to play this, then allow me to show you how it's done!"
Suddenly, Appius thrust his right arm forward as a stream of white and blue erupted out of his fingertips, heading straight for Anubis.
