Kiast: Velestari Temple

Perched on top of one of the many summits in the Or’ena mountain range on Kiast, only a few kilometers or so from the new Jedi Praxeum, the Velastari Temple is an old forgotten Vatali Jedi temple surrounded by mountain peaks on all sides. Thin wispy clouds and fog tend to linger around it when not otherwise blown away by the cold mountainous air channeled through the mountains. The hot suns of Kiast shine on this particular peak regularly, forming beautiful rainbows as the light reflects off the metallic surface of the Vatali structure. As a result, despite the temple’s heightened elevation, the Velastari Temple and its surroundings atop the peak are warm enough to not only support green vegetation, such as trees and grass, but also humanoid visitors, who can get by with a variety of layers depending on the season. In addition, the elevation makes the air breathable, the toxic fumes of the planet only residing in the lower atmospheres. Past the peak itself, the ground drops away quickly, forming dangerous ridges that travellers can use to travel from peak to peak.

Occupying a relatively flat portion of land on the summit, the Velastari Temple invokes the Jedi temples of old but with the classic design elements of the Vatali civilization and a few changes to suite the terrain. Hooded Vatali statues flank its entrance, the aged metallic stone having long lost its luster. The atrium of the temple is surrounded by four spiraling pillars and is filled in between with a cacophony of support structures, some of which include landing pads and storage. This once well-organized system of buildings has fallen into disarray, ancient machinery and debris breaking up any direct approach to the main temple itself. Long defunct droids, some partially scavenged, can be found throughout the atrium. As to the spiraling pillars, no one is quite sure if they are structurally sound, but they appear to have been watchtowers and may have possibly at some point served a secondary purpose due to the number of additional rooms within it.

Once one makes it past the atrium, the main temple itself comes into view, towering over the smaller spirals below. Like other ancient Jedi temples, it has many mysteries that will only reveal themselves to Force-users, unlocking portions of the temple one might assume didn’t exist. Its architecture is highly reminiscent of the old Jedi Order, though less grand in scale than its peers. Nevertheless, it has all of the remains of core components one would expect, such as a Jedi Council room, housing, a library, and training rooms. Few enter the temple itself unless undergoing trials and Odan-Urr does it best to preserve the Velastari Temple from further damage. This landmark serves as not only inspiration to the next generation of Jedi but also as a solemn reminder of the Jedi long gone.

Windos stood among the statues that marked the entrance to the Velastari Temple. He studied what he could of their hooded visages, wondering what details had been lost to the ravages of time. The chill of the crips mountain air bit against any exposed skin it could find, particularly stinging Windos' empty eye sockets. The wind won its eternal struggle with the heat of the early afternoon suns, and Windos pulled his worn cloak close.

The sound of servos interrupted the elder's contemplation and signaled the late—but not unexpectedly so—arrival of his sparring partner.

"Your droid could use some oil, kid," Windos chided as he turned to face the Kiffar.

A serious expression crossed Gui's brow as he coughed with a tone that universally translates to "excuse me?"

"Apologies," Windos corrected himself, "your droid could use some oil, High Councilor."

Gui's face cracked into his trademark smirk as he bound up the small number of steps to reach Windos and clasped arms in a friendly greeting. His droid remained at the bottom of the steps, alongside Windos' own floating droid companion. To an outsider, it appeared as if the temple structure itself was sacrosanct and that droids were not welcome upon it; this was far from the truth, the droids had simply been through this exercise enough times to know to give their owners a wide berth.

"I hope you're already warmed up, old man, I'm meant to be in a meeting," joked Gui, despite there being an element of truth to the statement.

"I don't have that many years on you," Windos sighed as he pulled the tight-fitting hood of his armor over his head and adjusted the apparatus that covered his eye sockets. He pulled his lightsaber hilt from one of the belts the crisscrossed his waist and took a moment longer than he'd have liked to find a comfortable grip. This particular hilt was designed for a droid's hand, not those of a humanoid, but it was the tool with which he had to work with for the moment.

Windos pushed his left foot forward and bent both knees, leaving a small trough of dust on the stonework in his foot's wake. His left arm came up in front of his chest, as his right slipped behind his back. In unison lightsaber and light shield sprung to life with a hum and an eruption of pale blue light.

Gui shrugged, "let's do this then." His smirk gained an edge of confidence as he grabbed a lightsaber hilt in each hand and turned side on to his opponent. He ignited both sabers with a flourish, their orange blades casting a fiery glow on the nearest statue and he settled into a stance with his primary saber across his body, and the other held out to the side as if an extension of his arm.

The pair eyed each other for a time, waiting for their counterpart to make the first move. They watched for the slightest twitch of muscle that telegraphed the opening volley.

Gui broke the stalemate first and closed the distance between combatants quickly, bringing both sabers to bear in rapid succession. The first strike connected with its target's light shield and the second missed as the Miraluka twisted out of its path. Windos returned the favor immediately, using the momentum of avoiding being sliced to bring his own saber in an upwards diagonal path.

Orange saber met blue and they locked together as both combatants pushed against each other. The intense light let off by the grinding of saber blades causing Gui to squint. Despite no physical discomfort, Windos felt himself doing the same.
