Cal is tall with pale, wrinkled skin, deep set dark eyes and short cut hair that had gone completely white. He has a neatly trimmed, equally white mustache, but no other facial hair. Of average height for a human, Cal has a lean body type. His receding hairline reveals scars across his forehead from an explosion he survived when he was much younger. He is also missing part of his right earlobe and has another scar across his left cheek.
As a former officer of the Galactic Empire, Cal had professionalism and order drilled into him from a young age. He strongly believes in everything being well-prepared, well-dressed, and well-organized. Later in life, Cal began carrying two slugthrower pistols on his belt and developed an outer rim accent. While he's not quite the upright Imperial of old that he thinks he is, Cal still holds an ideal of his youth in his mind that makes him think he's superior to most beings he comes in contact with - which often tarnishes his initial impression of them.
Cal's paradigm is about preparation. Everything he does is preparing for the future; from better training for the troops under his command, to improving the society he is a part of. He spends an extensive amount of time studying the works of past political and military leaders and writing in his journal his thoughts on what he reads and his philosophy on how to apply that to his life. His obsession with logistics, infrastructure, and societal development leaves little room for much else in his life.
In his middle years, when Cal was living among the New Republic, he came to detest their approach to warfare. Cal became very outspoken, and won't hesitate to call it like he sees it - regardless of who he is speaking to. This makes it hard for him to make friends and is sometimes a threat to his survival. He can get along with anyone - as long as he believes them intelligent enough to come around to his way of thinking. He has a tell that gives away what he is thinking; if he doesn't think he can convince someone to agree with him, he'll start paying attention to anything but them.
In his later years, on the run from the New Republic and struggling to figure out what to do with his life, Cal had a spirtual rebirth in the outer rim. Administering a settlement on an outer rim world, he found that he could use his military background and diplomatic skills to genuinely improve the lives of others. Now he feels that it's his calling to improve the quality of life wherever he goes - often at odds with other leaders who don't share his idealistic views. When he gets really frustrated; Cal lets his frustration out by meditation and training in martial arts - and prefers not to be bothered when he is doing so.
Whether in single combat or while commanding troops or ships, Cal doesn't like to stay in one place. He's always on the move in combat situations, even if the best option would be to wait or hold his position. Cal doesn't spend a lot of time planning once a conflict begins because his philosophy is to seize the initiative at all costs. This makes him hard for other commanders to work with and prone to ignore orders if he thinks he can quickly gain an advantageous position.
Cal avoids personal combat whenever possible, but will recklessly endanger himself to inspire troops under his command or if he thinks he stands to gain some diplomatic advantage. He will always go for dual slugthrowers first, hiding his martial arts ability to use as a last resort. His reckless disregard for his own life if he thinks it's necessary, coupled with his lack of armor or many weapons, means Cal is quite vulnerable if he chooses to personally get in a fight.
