Competition: How To Write Your CNS Character 101

How To Write Your CNS Character 101

In the Brotherhood, it is a useful thing to have a small document that helps others understand and write your character in fictions and runons. This was first pioneered in the Night Hawks battleteam by Muz and Janos and I would like to bring it to Clan Naga Sadow as a whole. Entries will consist of a few paragraphs (or more) detailing how your character looks, acts, and regards others as an aide to others writing them.

Please write at least one paragraph (preferably more) for each of these categories describing your character and how others should write them in fictions and runons. There is no maximum length. In this case, one paragraph consists of at least four complete sentences.

Appearance- dress, detail, physical, gear, etc.

Mannerisms and Quirks- personality, character flaws, how you view and interact with other persons/races/species /planetary inhabitants etc.

Combat- how your character behaves in combat.

Philosophy- how your character views the Force, reality or mysticism, and their own existence.

Entries will be graded using these categories: creativity (10%), spelling (15%), grammar (15%), detail (30%), and realism (30%). Janos Breaker will be the primary judge with Macron Sadow as an adjunct judge. Do keep it realistic and within DB rules as far as your gear goes.

Appearance

Small and psychically not intimidating with an Ectomorphic build, its the sharp look in his clear big brown eyes that cause people to approach with caution. With light brown hair that turns to a blackish color when not having showered for a day due to grease, handsome facial features, a straight nose with flared nostrils and a flashy smile that makes the opposite sex find him attracting despite his tendency to eventually feed on them with his tentacle like proboscises that allowed him to drink his "soup".

Darkblade prefers to wear clothing that allow him to move freely, and rarely wears anything that looks "fancy" as this makes him feel extremely uncomfortable due to the fact he feels restricted in his movements. As such, Darkblade despises people dressed in "fancy" clothes and tends to avoid such lavish places.

Darkblade carries his lightsaber clipped inside his robes on the left side of his body. His Lanvarok is strapped to his left hand and usually covered by the sleeve of his robe to hide it from plain sight. He also earned a Sith Sword, but does not use it in combat as he finds the blade ugly. Instead it adorns his QUA office wall in Lions Tooth.

Mannerisms and Quirks

Despite Darkblades dark nature, he is usually very different around Clan members or friends. Whereas he would torture an unknown person and not think twice about it, he is outgoing and casual with friends. He feels that they anchor him to this world, and deep down inside they prevent him from going power mad.

He likes to prepare things, know things and feels uncomfortable in situations he did not foresee or plan. Should he be caught off-guard, he tends to close himself from others and engages in only necessary conversation.

Combat

Darkblade is cautious going into combat he hasn’t planned on going into. If caught unaware, Darkblade prefers to play defensive, reading his opponent and ensuring he makes no mistakes. He’d rather wait for an opening by an overconfident attacker than create an opening himself. Should Darkblade go into combat which he has prepared for, he is still cautious but more willing to be on the offensive. Taunting and baiting the person to act recklessly with targeted words.

This usually comes from the research done beforehand, knowing everything he can about his opponents before engaging them in battle. It’s very crucial for Darkblade to be aware of opponents, and preferably the first to strike. Due to his lack of combat related skills and powers, he relies more on stealth, secrecy and the hope that his first strike is deadly and effective.

Philosophy

Darkblade views the Force as a tool to help him achieve his ultimate goal. Finding his long lost partner. The path to power has led Darkblade to the Dark side of the Force. He only cares about seeing her again and will go through any and all means necessary to achieve that goal. Passion drives him, as well as his ego. Believing himself superior than others, the Force is also his to command. This feeling of being above everyone else is when he is prying information from his subjects when they refuse to give anything willingly.

Aul Celsus
Textual submission

[Appearance]
Out of combat and at rest, Aul is usually found in Jedi style robes of a dark gray or brown color. When necessary for the safety of his research, he may wear a lab coat instead of his robe over his tunic/undertunic. In combat scenarios, Aul can be found wearing his standard issue combat medic gear, including hood and associated wearable gear. Among his gear includes stimpacks, various antidotes and anti-toxins, as well as sample collection vials for the opportunity to collect rare specimens in the field.

Aul generally carries his lightsaber on the left of his belt. Occasionally he can bet found with a DC-17 blaster or a vibroblade, but has been known to use them less and less since achieving the rank of Knight. This may be due to a hearkening back to traditional values.

Though Aul does not have large muscles, the lean muscles he does have are well-conditioned and he is capable of exhibiting strength and endurance approaching the level of his more athletic peers. This is partly due to a very strong will power. As a result, however, he may overexert himself and require a period of rest or recovery.

[Mannerisms and Quirks]
Aul is continuously curious and highly skeptical. He is a researcher at heart, and this nature permeates his entire world. He is known to be a bit of a wallflower, choosing to observe a scene for some time before becoming involved in order to best assess a situation.

Aul is socially well-adjusted, but his wit has been known to come off as condescending or sarcastic in certain circumstances. Part of this is due to his opinion that frankness and observation trump a sugar-coating nature. To Aul, facts are facts, so what is the point of making something sound better than it is?

Aul is fascinated by the diversity of the galaxy and thus has no biases against any specific persons, races, species, etc. He relishes the opportunity to meet new sentient species. However, he is still capable of forming judgements on the behaviors of some societies, and those that are outright destructive are usually avoided.

[Combat]
Aul’s combat style is defense by nature. He does not look to destroy, maim or kill whenever possible. It is his opinion that all living things are a wonder, but not because they are necessarily “good,” but rather because life itself is a miraculous thing. Thus, he does not look to specifically kill anything, except perhaps maybe to study its inner workings.

Aul will generally analyze a situation in order to find a creative solution to a combat problem without requiring putting himself into harms way. Effective uses of the environment, available terrain, and other nearby equipment are all things that Aul prefers to use rather than to go head-on into combat, where a mistake is not easily corrected. However, when it comes to a one-on-one duel, Aul has trained extensively in Soresu and can perform admirably against even high caliber duelists, but most often with a goal of defense and disarmament.

[Philosophy]
All knowledge is worth having, according to Aul. The Force is the ultimate example of a knowledge to be gained, as it permeates everything in the galaxy. To Aul, there is no Light or Dark, there is only the Force. Thus, he does not necessarily eschew the teachings of either the Light or the Dark, but acknowledges both without bias or judgement. However, due to his nature of going away from destruction, Aul most often acts in a manner that is not congruent with Dark teachings. This is not to say that he a member of the Light Path, but rather than he is willing to learn and understand the Dark teachings as a matter of information, and will only act with a Dark nature when the situation necessitates it.

Epis Locke Sonjie
Textual submission

APPEARANCE

Locke Sonjie is a somewhat plain-looking human male. He has sand-colored blonde hair and jade green eyes. Locke is tall and built as a soldier might be. He usually dresses for the task at hand. Other times, he will wear his robes, which are really more of a mixture of a combat outfit, based upon an old Obelisk style. He usually carries a mixture of weapons, including his lightsaber, a blaster pistol, a slugthrower, a few thermal detonators, and a blaster rifle. Armed with these and with the Force, he beleives he is prepared for any situation.

MANNERISMS AND QUIRKS

Locke is capable of maintaining a completely neutral tone and expression. Hours upon hours of dealing with state officials and politics in the Brotherhood have helped him gain full control over his outward emotional state, and this is rarely broken. Locke does try to find humor in even the most bleak situations. He also detests strict professionalism and won't resist any opportunity to offset someone by acting unprofessional, such as throwing his feet up on a table during an important meeting. He will, however, try not to do this if it is likely to lead to a result he will dislike. As a Bakuran, Locke has a distaste for droids that he is slowly getting over. He views most other races from a neutral perspective, though stereotypes do fall into his thoughts. For example, he generally dislikes Zeltrons because of their reputation for seduction and hedonistic practices.

COMBAT

Locke will first use diplomacy and negotiation to try to avoid combat. If this does not work, he will try to engage enemies from range and switch to his lightsaber if necessary. He will still continue to speak to his opponents during this, attempting to wear them down, offset them, or talk them down even while fighting. In general engagements, he will lead Sadowan troops from the front lines, and has trained his Force abilities to support them. One example of this is his Healing abilities. He can quickly heal minor wounds and use the Force to treat tramuatic battlefield wounds. In addition, he has learned to use the Force to light multiple enemies. Locke is capable of splitting his Force Lightning or TK to strike or choke multiple opponents at once. Finally, as an Arcanist, Locke can restore his Force reserves between skirmishes, allowing him to support troops for a long period of time. His Dowsing ability also allows him to use the Force to find nearby allies or enemies, using what evidence they leave behind at a scene.

PHILOSOPHY

Locke views the Force as a tool, just as he would a blaster or starfighter. To him, it is just another way he can augment his chances in battle and in conflicts. He has little faith in mystical artifacts unless given solid evidence, but will not pass up a chance to direct CNS forces to retrieve an artifact that may be useful. Still, he will generally put more stock in actual troops, ships, and equipment, rather than in ancient relics that may or may not help. Locke also believes the key to peace in the galaxy is rule by empire, and that the Brotherhood may be the progenitor of this empire. Thus, he is patient as the group slowly expands, knowing that this is a process that could take eons and is unlikely to be accomplished in his lifetime. In the meantime, his motivation is to protect his immediate family (his older sister) from external threats.

Marcus Kiriyu
Textual submission

**Appearance**
While Marcus is of relatively short stature for his race, he is still considered tall for a humanoid. He is generally muscular without being overly so, a genetic trait for his race. His eyes seem to pierce whatever they look at with an emerald stare.

His face is marred by several scars, one from his left temple to his cheekbone, one from his lip to his chin, and a snaking scar running from his neck down the rest of his body. His short black hair, tarnished by silver-white streaks, is tousled and unkempt.

His stance is arrogant and tense, never seeming to relax fully. He keeps an air of formal composure about himself.

His outfit consists of a military-style undershirt, covered by a loose fitting frock coat, allowing for the full ranges of movement needed during combat. His boots are military, and a cloak is tied to the neck of his coat.

**Mannerisms and Quirks**
Marcus Kiriyu has a tendency to be secretive and keeps to himself, relying on deception to conceal his motives and intentions. He is a schemer, and plots and plans against others carefully. When dealing with a confrontation, he will try and bluff his way out of trouble, or overcome obstacles with deliberate, covert actions.

People tend to reverently follow Marcus Kiriyu’s lead and look up to him in difficult situations. Whether through inspirational behaviour, fear and manipulation, or belief and hope for a better future, they think that Marcus Kiriyu genuinely believes what he does. This is all a clever facade, however, as Marcus Kiriyu is not always as upstanding and respectable as his followers believe. He is no idol, but an opportunist who knows how to manipulate a crowd into bettering his own machinations.

**Combat**
Marcus Kiriyu has mastered his own form of melee combat, Hin'Tan, which combines elements from Broken Gate with Barrier and Telekinesis. It works by protecting his extremities with a Force-powered barrier, protecting them from harm. This technique requires significant concentration on the part of the user, linked directly to their skill in the Force power Barrier.

The art of Hin'Tan focuses on blocking, or swatting aside, physical attacks, allowing a practitioner to get too close to their opponent and pummel them with punches charged with telekinetic energy, dealing devastating damage. Hin'Tan is highly dependent on the user's own agility and ruthlessness in combat, as well as having no support for any weapons. Its use is therefore dangerous as the practitioner is effectively exposed unless he can keep the focus required to raise the barriers and concentrate his telekinesis.

Aside from this mode of combat, Marcus Kiriyu has been noted, at times, for being less than serious in a fight. He will approach any enemy he might see as beneath him with an air of cocky assurance and casual nonchalance, made more poignant by his annoyance that someone dare stand in his way. This is often accompanied by an eye-roll that says, "Now look, you've gone and made me pull out my lightsaber."

Depending on the opponent, this can have an intimidating effect which may help or hinder Marcus Kiriyu's efforts in defeating his foe.

Philosophy
Marcus sees the Force much like he sees anything and anyone; as a tool to be used for his own ends. His mind is firmly rooted in the here and now, having once been tempted by visions of the Force that led to the scars that now deform his skin, he is highly unlikely to follow such ethereal trappings again. Life for Marcus has but one goal: to accomplish his own objectives. As long as he has not accomplished all he has set in motion for himself (and others), he will not diminish or give up.

Master Bentre Stahoes

Zachary is a man to whom function trumps style. For him the robes commonly worn by Jedi serve as suitable garb and the best gear is the simplest. His physical appearance is a little rougher than one might believe from a former Jedi and self-described philosopher, but that is just because he chooses to place matters of study and action before minor details such as grooming. The lightsabers he carries (use granted to him by the Quaestor of Marka Ragnos) and the worn slugthrower he carries are kept in prime condition however.

For O'Maille the world is a place of liars, cheats and manipulators. He believes the Jedi are as corrupt as the Sith as a whole. It isn't that he hates people, he values individualism and sees each individual as valuable even if they are too stupid to realize their own value. For this reason he chooses not to kill his opponents, preferring to give them an opportunity to grow and develop.

His attitude can be seen as rough and uncaring to some, but in his own worldview, it is quite the opposite. To him people just don't know what is best for them. He has little patience for the political machinations within the Brotherhood or the galaxy, seeing such interactions as natural extensions of the lying and backbiting inherent in sentient society.

As such he is largely neutral unless those he considers friends- such as House members as Aedile- and himself are put in danger. His melancholic view of the world has not improved as he has aged. Instead it has lead him to partake in alcohol and on occasion, deathsticks. Still there is a sense of honor in everything that O'Maille does. Given his view of the world, he is a man true to his word- even if it is a slightly twisted version of it 'from a certain point of view'. He fancies himself a protector of those in need, even if he does not count himself worthy, an attitude which exasperates his drinking problem more.

Ultimately the most straight-forward method of waging war is what works best for O’Maille. Combat requires finesse, but just as in his choice of clothing and equipment, his battle theory is simple: to end combat in as expeditious a manner as possible. This doesn’t always mean ending combat as quickly as possible, but doing it while spilling as little blood as possible. Sometimes this means a brutal strike to an opponent, but death is not his goal.

All things are connected in the Force. The Force is a tool, and whatever he does he refuses to give himself over completely to his rage. He does not count himself amongst the Sith, amongst the Jedi, or anywhere in the murky middle ground. The man is constantly searching for some deeper truth than the galaxy as he knows it. His place in the galaxy is something he has yet to discover, and so he spends as much time as he can in meditation. He has been gifted with many visions via the Force, such as those that brought him to Clan Naga Sadow. Until he can understand the full meaning of those visions, until he can understand what the Force has for him there, it is where he will serve.
