Competition: Starfall: The Life of a Miner

Finished
Starfall: The Life of a Miner

Objective:

Mining on Aesirus is a hard job. Caves could collapse at any moment. They have not been properly mapped, no-one really knows what might lie inside. The tide could flood the cave at any moment. Constant and absolute darkness. Describe the difficult conditions the miners face in the form of poetry.

Scoring: Minimum of 15 lines of poetry required. Free prose is not allowed, must follow some form of rhyme or poetry style (e.g. 5 Haiku, or an ABAB Rhyme style).

Grading will be based upon poetic composition, adherence to the prompt, and creativity of the poem.

Dust

Once upon a time, I never gave a thought
To what blew to and fro through the air
But now I am paid for and bought
The almighty company doesn't even care

Darkness's grip is all around
Silence is never present at all
Death's presence is easily found
With simply a a roof's fall

Lasers and other fancy tools
Gone in favor of the picks
Those are left for the fools
That are sickly sticks

Clogging the lungs of all
Death's embrace for some
Barely able to voice a call
Help for them will never come.

The grand ol' mine in rock and dirt,
For kaiburr, adegan, steel what's worth,
The grandstand corporation, work we will,

But when we're hurt and when we die,
Our families and friends suffering applies,
Miners, miners, working that ol' mill.

So tell it to the Emperor, tell it to his friends,
We're gonna get the corporation killed again,
The Cocytus System will give us all we need.

The saviour of our people, the saviour of our families,
Destiny as hot as iron, and our work is for everybody,
Working for the Empire gives us a reason to bleed.

Money is a flowing and the people are a glowing,
And the injuries are gone, what else could go wrong,
Nothing, because we live and die by the drill.

Working and a dragging no longer anymore,
No one to watch your back because no one does score,
When everyone works for everyone else on the hill.

The Miner’s Folly

He we stand in a deep deep hole
Looking for rocks digging like a mole
Oh look we have spotted a crystal
Dig it out quick before we find the mist yall.
Watch your head lads as you crawl through the dark.

Deeper and deeper we go.
Holes we make here to and fro.
Searching everyday
Nothing to find but what do we say?
We continue to dig into the great underground.

The cave is collapsing quickly.
A hole exposes creatures sleeping.
How long have they been here?
No one knows but soon the men will be weeping.
The dangers of the cave draw ever closer.

Toiling, dying,
The walls close in around me,
I wonder, what was my sin,
Why can’t I see?

Toiling, dying,
With each stroke of my hammer,
I wonder, how can they sing,
As we so labour?

Toiling, dying,
The sacrifice for mine beloved,
I wonder, do you ever think,
Think me dead?

Toiling, dying,
Long have I been broken,
I wonder, where is my ending,
Am I the forgotten?

Toiling, dying,
For I will always love you,
I wonder, is this money,
Enough… to save you?

Toiling, dying,
Everyday and every night,
I *hope*, wherever you are,
You know I fight.
