Competition: ***Your*** Duel of the Fates - A Combat Fiction Competition

Finished
***Your*** Duel of the Fates - A Combat Fiction Competition

Prompt

Write a story about one of the most important and fateful fights in your character's life, one in which Mr. William's famous theme "Duel of the Fates" would be an appropriate accompaniment for the high stakes of the encounter and its outcome. What is the origin of this encounter, under what circumstances does it begin, and what are the stakes of the encounter? What is the outcome?

This prompt is referring specifically to forms of combat, such as duels, small operations, or larger scale battles. A potential example of a fateful fight could include (but is not limited to) a lightsaber duel between rivals, commanding or fighting in a final battle in a large-scale war, fighting your martial arts master to graduate a class, trying to fight a losing battle where your forces are outmatched by the enemy, being stuck behind enemy lines and fighting for freedom, fending off an assassination attempt, etc. Your submission may include other encounters, but the outcome of the story should hinge on one major combat encounter. This encounter does not have to be against a known rival of your chosen PoV character, but you are free to choose to explore this route if you wish!

This means that types of fighting which are not explicitly combat, such as heated political debates, legal arguments, disagreements among family or friends etc. are excluded from submission.

Rules

  • Minimum 500 words, no maximum word count.
  • Entries must be submitted in .docx, .doc, .pdf or copy and pasted into the competition submission box.
  • Grading will be done using the Voice Fiction rubric.
  • You must include a snapshot of the primary PoV character. This can be your main, your alt, or another one of your NPCs. It must be written from a character connected to your dossier, but you of course are welcome and encouraged to include other characters in your story from across the Brotherhood!
  • Finally, less of a rule but more of a reminder: your character does not have to be successful in the story. You are free to write a story focusing on wins, losses, or even ambiguous endings to this combat encounter. It's your choice.
