Wouldn't it be cool if the DJB had a coloring book, with possibly a contribution/collaboration from all of the wonderful artists here? While also getting some fun clusters for your artwork? Anyone say, passion project turned into fun competitions?
Well, here it is. For the first quarter of the year, there will be a competition each month for you to add an amazing piece of your artwork, no matter what type of medium you use, to the coloring book. I will be giving a variety of themes as guidelines for the each comp. Now since this is for a coloring book, all artwork does not need to be completely finished, it is to be mainly line work. Depending on how many entries come in for each series of competitions, there may be a couple volumes of comp series throughout the year to fill in the pages till we have enough.
Main Rules
* No pressure, as this will be done with blind judging.
* Formats: .PNG, .JPG, .PDF.
* Useful Digital Tools: GIMP, Photoshop, Krita, Sketchbook.
* Grading Criteria: Mostly I'll be looking at the Herald Graphics Grading Rubric, with some variances, such as I'll be looking at how well the linework is done, since these are going to be coloring pages, so no colors just lines. If there is line work that might need to be touched up before going in the book, vs the linework is great and translates well to be a clear picture to color... stuff like that. I will be more than happy to provide my grading system to anyone who asks for it after each sub competition.
** That being said, I don't want to make anyone sad that they can't submit, so I'm making a special rule for those who prefer to paint more than do linework, that if they aren't comfortable with line art, they can submit a full color image, it just won't place, but still get participation and clusters of Graphite. I will take on the task of figuring out the linework and will be in contact to make sure they are comfortable with the way I did it, especially if they really would like that image in the book.
Scoring and placements:
- Participation will grant 1 point
- 4th place grants 2 points
- 3rd place grants 3 points
- 2nd place grants 4 points
- 1st place grants 5 points
- Ties will be broken by the number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd placements in the individual sub-competitions.
Note: All entries must be original artwork and if any resources are used which are not original must be cited in the submission box.
Now, quick disclaimer here: As I said in the Art chat (way way back), this is strictly a passion project that I want to do for the club. It's not going to be for profit, this compilation of art is not going to go outside of the DJB. The full plan is to put together a digital copy for those who prefer digital art and then printed copies to send to those who prefer doing traditional art, and only to those within the club. So for those who make a living selling your artwork, know that, if you do contribute, this will not leave the DJB without your express permission (after every competition I will still be asking everyone if I can use their art for the book and any other questions I may have), and your ownership of said art will not be plagiarized. I just thought that this would be a neat and cool way to share each other's art styles and then see how others would take the artwork, and well, color how they see our characters, pets, vehicles, and the DJB symbols.
