Competition: [Parabellum Cycle 1] Miscellaneous - Agents

Finished
[Parabellum Cycle 1] Miscellaneous - Agents
This competition is in the [Parabellum Cycle 1] Miscellaneous Bin.

Participation Type: Low Impact

The agreement between the Brotherhood and the Severian Principate to train Principate troops has led to a dramatic rise in contact between the two factions. The Shroud Syndicate is always on the lookout for people who can get things done discreetly, has jumped at the opportunity to make new, sympathetic friends within the Principate’s ranks. Spies are all well and good, but a buddy who can do you a favour is even better.

Of course, the Shroud hasn’t given up its underworld roots. Among Brotherhood members who flout the law, word of both cordial relationships and lasting grudges travels quickly. A lowlife scoundrel you can trust is worth their weight in aurodium, even if they aren’t an ace pilot or deadly mercenary.

Options

Option 1

Design an NPC member of the Severian military who received training from the Brotherhood, and is willing to do a few favours in return.

Option 2

Design an NPC working with a pirate or other criminal group who might be open to working for the Brotherhood, for the right price.

Rules

  • The NPC you design must be an “average” member of the chosen faction, and their skills should reflect that. In Brotherhood rank terms, they would be considered Journeymen, or possibly low-level Equites.

  • Your entry must include a name, apparent age, physical description, and a description of the character’s skills and abilities. The total length of the submission must be fewer than 500 words. You may not use your own characters for this competition, even those who aren’t technically “Brotherhood members”.

  • You may submit your entry as a .doc or .pdf file, or via the website text box. Google Docs links will not be accepted. Do NOT submit CS sandbox codes.

  • Character images are allowed but not required, and if included, must be sourced according to the Brotherhood’s Fair Use Policy.

  • Entries will be graded on adherence to the competition’s prompt and rules, creativity, and realism. Ties will be broken by judge preference.

So here is my version of the Agent Dossier. I wanted to do something other than just a typical piece of paper dossier and wanted to give it a noir feel. What I did is I used stock photos of the folder, paper, top secret, film strip and key from my Pixaroma and Shutterstock accounts. Then from there just built layers and converted to smart objects to lay them on their own editable layer. Then I added the text with the appropriate dossier info and added the graphics which I received from the Herald and the Cathar is a photo from Roleplayerguild.com. Also my .pdf doc was 55mb and was too large to upload. That is why I uploaded a .jpg and I have it saved as .pdf in case I need to send to Org'ers another way.

Name : Gorbal Slump-Eyed

Age : 28

A middling pirate willing to trade his own mother for a pocketful of creds, Gorbal Slump-Eyed is the very definition of a thug, and a brutish specimen of the Gran species. He stands a head and shoulder above the average person and cuts an imposing frame, with broad, round shoulders and a pot belly. He's a walking mix of muscle and fat. His leathery brown skin is marred with scar tissue and bruises, but it's the missing eye that demands attention. Gran usually have three eyes protruding from their goat-like heads, but his left-most one is missing entirely, the eye stalk severed at the base. This gives him a lopsided look that makes this dim-witted creature all the more difficult to take seriously.

He is an excellent brawler, strong as an ox and particularly deadly with an pulse-hammer. He can also has exceptional pain tolerance and is thus able to withstand a great deal of damage and keep fighting well past the point of exhaustion. He has only adequate accuracy with a blaster, which is why in battle he is more likely to chuck a crate at his enemy than take cover behind it.

His greatest skill may be the most surprising: he's an exceptional cook with a refined palate. Where other crews are served rations and slop, he treats his crew mates to exotic meals, putting ingredients they pilfer to good use. This, more so than his brute strength, make him a desirable hireling.

Name: Sergeant Kel Arfur
Age: 34
Physical Description:
Kel is a wiry, almost gaunt man with sharp features and hungry eyes that miss nothing. Standing at 1.78 meters, his lean frame and slight build show that he is not a man that thrives in combat. His brown hair is cropped short but always looks slightly disheveled. His uniform is technically regulation, as he has tailored them to hide extra pockets and compartments. His weapon of choice is a well worn datapad which is always within reach. Kel projects an outward air of relaxed dishevelment, but this affectation hides the fact that he is a man who knows exactly where the leverage in any conversation lies.
Kel is not a warrior by any definition of the word. He is a small scale broker of equipment, material, and manipulator of the Principate's logistics systems. His training with Brotherhood forces has given him knowledge of that organization's supply, transportation, and logistics protocols as well. He can within the boundaries of his reach make rations stretch or vanish, reroute shipments, and ensure that just the right amount of unaccounted for gear finds its way into the right hands. Never too much and always on time.

His true skill is in navigating systems both official and unofficial. He knows how to grease palms, forge signatures, and make a paper trail look completely legitimate. He does not hoard favors; he trades them. If someone needs something, Kel can get it...for a price.

Kel doesn't believe in "patriotism" and has no real loyalty to the Severian Principate beyond the fact that his position provides him with a steady income and opportunities he'd not find outside a military hierarchy. He views his training with the Principate's allies within the Brotherhood as just another resource to be exploited. He works with the Force users not out of any sense of awe or loyalty, but because he understands that any power requires bureaucratic infrastructure. He is fully aware that navigating within that infrastructure requires restraint and is wary of overreach. Pragmatism is his watchword, and he will do nothing to put himself in peril.

Kel sees the military and war in general as marketplaces with customers and contacts like any other. Every favor he curries is an investment, every deal closed a step to the final payout that will allow him to retire into comfortable ambivalence.

# System’s Analyst - Talvin J’an

# Description

## Name

Talvin J’an

## Age

42

## Physical description

Talvin is a middle-aged Bith with the typical bald cranium. His skin is a pale white and shows signs of both significant lack of sunlight and the onset of wrinkling as he approaches the elder side of middle-age. His large black eyes have crows feet around them and his layered jowls have considerable stubble. He has developed an unhealthy body shape where his belly rolls over his pants and his chest sags at 111.13kg and a height of 1.76m.

## Skills and abilities

Like most System Analysts within the Severian military complex, Talvin is both low enough to go unnoticed by anyone in authority but, by nature of his role, requires the highest level of security access to their systems. While his days typically are spent partitioning new datapads or ensuring the holoprojectors are working he needs to be able to access all the encrypted data to ensure new users are provisioned correctly.

As such, he was a perfect target for the Imperial Mission in the Caperion System. Following his family home’s destruction in Caelestis City following the attack by the Children of Mortis his family was relocated and provided a post apartment in the newly created city near the Monolith. He was provided new skill training and preferential job placement with the Severian military.

Now, Talvin finds himself uniquely positioned to repay the generosity given to him by the Imperial Mission in exchange for new perks for his family back on Seraph.
