The R2-series "Rebellion Edition" Astromech Droid is a variant of the R2-series Astromech Droid that has been heavily modified and upgraded by the Rebel Alliance in their opposition to the Galactic Empire's reign.
This R2-series "Rebellion Edition" Astromech Droid has greatly improved astrogation programming, allowing it to perform incredibly more complex maneuvers and store additional hyperspace coordinates or jumps within its memory.
An improved sensor suite has been installed inside the droid brain of R2-S5 "Sparks", allowing a much wider scanning area than a standard R2-series "Rebellion Edition" Astromech Droid.
An experimental automated repair system has been installed on this R2-series "Rebellion Edition" Astromech Droid, giving it an ability to perform or assist in the performance of self-diagnosis and self-repair of its mechanical systems. This system slows the droid while it assesses any necessary repairs when dealing with heavy damage, and can perform very basic tasks or actions while assessing necessary repairs.
