The R5-series Astromech Droid is a cut-price version of the R-series product line produced by Industrial Automation. It is designed with a shorter, cone-shaped head, with a cylindrical core in addition to a base, retractable tread leg, and two main legs. It has multiple appendages and attachments within its compartments, all of which are repair tools, and also came equipped with a periscope that has a probe function which is usable in space. These low-cost models were plagued with malfunctions and prone to defects.
R5 (Chatterbox) has developed a quirked personality, granting it an inclination towards heavy doses of sarcasm when engaged in dialogue. As a result, R5 (Chatterbox) comes across as having issues taking direction and developed a reputation for 'snark'.
R5 (Chatterbox) has had every external component painted black as night, with attempts to minimize the brightness of external lights and features. This allows this R5-series Astromech Droid to more easily blend into the shadows and darkness unseen.
