Primary reason

Len has been one of the unsung heroes of the COU summit for ages now, a quiet but steady presence helping to bind our community together. I will leave the descriptions of his service as Rollmaster and Appeals Panelist to experts, and focus on Len the member.

Since his last recognition, Len has participated in 40 competitions, most notably during the recent Rite of Supremacy. My primary instruction to the summit was to show up and get engaged in the event, and Len did not disappoint. He earned full completion in all three phases and did all but one of the event-long competitions. Across his spectrum of activity, he has earned 308 Clusters of Fire, 44 Clusters of Ice, 6 Clusters of Graphite, 8 crescents, including two with a Ruby Star, and a Legion of the Scholar. Somewhat unusually for a veteran equite, Len has remained engaged with the Shadow Academy, completing ten courses and earning two degrees. This include the Dark Sage in Law, one of perhaps two that I've seen awarded to an Odanite in my time in leadership.

In on time working together, I've relied on Len to represent the interests of journeymen, both new and old, and keep my decisions balanced between the needs of loud and prominent veterans and members who haven't have the chance to put down roots yet. He's been a fair and reasonable source of counsel and a friendly and active example for our new members to look up to.

Additional reasons

Len served the Chamber of Justice as a member of the Appeals Panel for the 2018 term. It was a quiet term for the Panel, but Len and his fellow panelists were on-call every day for the entire year, ready to address issues put to them with little to no notice. Thank you and congratulations, Len!

Len Iode took on the mantle of Rollmaster about 10 months ago and during that time he has processed and handled 37 new join/transfers. These standard Rollmaster processing duties include things such as welcome messages, goodbye messages, pulse checks, promotions, and assigning the new member a master should they wish. The bulk of the work for these tasks revolved around assistance and reaching out to new members, a task that on the surface may not seem like much. On the contrary, I can tell you from personal experience that this is the hardest thing to do. It requires multiple reach outs at what could be any day of the week and at any time. For example, one time one of our members was having an repeated issue. Len called an "emergency pup meeting" with several mentors, briefed the team on the issue (character sheet denial + bad response by member), and helped out the member himself until a specialist could assist the member further. This saga lasted a while believe it or not and required a mixture of empathy and lots of patience. Not only that but you have to keep track of everyone at once and how well they are doing. For much of his time he also had the unenviable duty of saying goodbye to most of them, a truly depressing but necessary chore. Throughout this all, he kept on and put forth his best. I know how draining that can be, especially in a large clan like Odan-Urr, and thus am very grateful. Thank you so much Len.

But there's more! That merely covers the bare minimum of what I'd consider a traditional Rollmaster but Len also went beyond. First, he set up a system of mentors, grabbing experts in certain key tasks to help him troubleshoot with young members. This involved some management overhead which he handled nicely. Second, he managed and ran a telegram chat solely for new joins. This channel was useful in concentrating questions and getting the new members to get to know each other across the Houses. Lastly, he created, participated, and managed a roleplay channel for Odan-Urr to help assist one or two or our younger members who wished to get together with others like them. This was a great example of setting up a community involvement platform and experimenting with new ways to help out our members. These things take time, energy, and effort but help members truly try out the DB for all it can be. Much like a foreign policy, it doesn't always pay off in the short-term but it does in the long-term. Len's efforts either immediately helped a new member or went a long way towards Odan-Urr building a relationship with them.

In summary, Odan-Urr, a larger clan, always seems to be in need of extra help to manage its roster and community. Rollmaster is important to us, key to our growth, and we are very grateful for all his service. Len, thank you for all you've done and continue to do and of course for putting up with me. You deserve every bit of this Grand Cross. Congratz!!
