Ruka is a broad-shouldered young man of average height, his body lined in ropy muscle with ribs and hipbones jutting sharp under his tight skin. Formerly a back-alley fighter now trained among proud Jedi and Sith, his arms, chest, and shoulders are particularly well-defined, a chiseled upper body dropping to a narrow waist, spine straight and confident. Ruka's vibrant green, peridot skin and dark, malachite hair, nearly black in low light, make him a spot of color against almost any backdrop. His youthful face, curled in a shy grin as often as a grumpy scowl, is set with eyes even brighter in hue, their royal violet shade sparkling with hints of paradise blue underneath thick, squared brows, the left of which is broken by a faint scar glancing from cheekbone to forehead and just missing his sharp nose. Knife-cut, pillow-styled, and impossibly thick, Ruka's long hair, waist-length, is bundled in dreadlocks and kept held loosely back from his face.
Much of Ruka's body, particularly his left side and particularly his face and skull, are covered in deep shrapnel scars from a grenade. The thin and thick lines spray in pale, minty white slashes over his features, disrupting his lips and brow and cutting grooves into his cheeks and jaw, a large starburst dominating his rigid abdomen; his left ear is gone, only a ragged edge remaining. Two additional scars on his torso include a jagged, straight line across his abdomen, running horizontally from hip to hip and disappearing into the older starburst, and a spider-webbing reddish burn scar on his left pectoral, darkest right over his heart, from a lightning strike. His right arm and left leg have ribbon-like slashes curling around them left by bestial claws. Several piercings decorate what they still can of his ears, notably the black gauge in the lobe and hoops in the shell, in addition to piercings in his tongue and chest, and his nails are naturally black in color in hands that are covered in rough callouses and small worker's scars.
Most notable of the Mirialan's appearance, however, are his geometric tattoos classic to his people. Ruka has several more than just the typical facial tattoos, with patterns also wrapping around his wrists and ankles and over the backs of his hands and up his forearms in sleeves. The man's black-ink markings predominantly consist of triangles and small squares, sweeping under his eyes and marching up along his jaw from his chin. Additionally, a pair of solid black ink wings stretch across his entire back, his largest tattoo, the feathers sweeping wide in simple shapes that make up a coherent angelic pattern. Ruka's facial markings were also expanded after marrying into his husband's noble family, the dots and curves of House Ya-ir over his brow and framing his eyes. The second largest of his tattoos is an enormous, bold black flower emblazoned across his right bicep for anyone to see, the Lotus symbol shouting proudly. Lastly, a simple dagger shape sits directly over his sternum, tip pointing down between pectorals and terminating at the hollow of his ribcage.
These obvious and, to some, exotic designs compliment his first generation accent, not so thick in his mouth that his tongue can't fall flat enough to form Basic, but still very much there, richly spicing every word.
When life had taught him that he was, ultimately, alone, the galaxy elected to prove Ruka wrong the day he met his partner, Corazon Ya-ir. Ruka found his eyes opened by the Jedi's optimism, kindness, and love, found that the beauty and faith in the Light was something to be treasured and respected. When all else of Ruka is challenged as he controls the chaos and tempest of the Dark, Corazon is his balance and guiding key, reminding him how to stay steady and strong. When together, the two stand united, practicing Battle Meditation to make themselves a complimentary, dyadic whole. When apart, though, their worry for one another and their separate missions can be taxing, and Ruka himself is more prone to the negative effects of the Dark Side's influence, displayed in everything from bouts of recklessness or doubt to reoccurring nightmares.
Ruka spent the entirety of his young life entrapped by the throes of caste-based urban poverty, the responsibility of raising two children, and the Light-written tenants of teachings in which he had no place. He has been scoffed at, beat down, and judged wanting at almost every turn, as if he were something disgusting or wicked.
But Ruka also found freedom and happiness in the Dark Side's embrace, and he chooses it even as he is mindful of it, bearing its power as both bracers and shackles, knowing how far the fall if he slips. Ruka only wishes to use his power to enact real change, to be the person to others that he once needed. He strives constantly to reach the height of his hopes, to prove both to the world and to himself that he's worthy of the ones he loves most, that he's good enough to fly.
Ruka has always done whatever he had to for his family, at any cost to himself, disdaining authority and willfully rulebreaking. However, the once-entrenched bitterness and loneliness he carried in that duty has been tempered by his years as a Knight of the Lotus, and he has grown truly into that title thanks to the belief inspired in him by his partner, who saw in him the truest definition of noble: always putting others before himself, always possessed of a sense of justice and honor, despite thinking such concepts dead. Now settled in his skin, Ruka will never turn his back on anyone suffering, not just his family, devoted to being their shield to anyone in need.
This same devotion can make him a little blind, however, to hurting those he loves in getting himself hurt by inserting himself into situations he once would have walked away from.
It's easily assumed when looking at him, not entirely incorrectly, that Ruka is uncultured and antisocial, a streetrat playing at knight. But Ruka doesn't hate or distrust people; he just doesn't count on them. He grew up on his own two feet, able to rely only on himself to take care of his family. Born in gutters, raised with stoops, mom-and-pop shops, and gang violence as his playground, Ruka bears street smarts in a clever mind but lacks any formal education and is intolerant of things he sees as harmful, like alcohol, drugs, violence, and criminality.
His self-reliant manner, lack of strict decorum, and stubborn beliefs make him oftentimes hard to approach or difficult to manage in diplomatic situations. Anyone looking in, however, will find a young man brimming with burning passion, a fierce protectiveness sometimes too close to overbearing, and most of all, a defining, bone-deep sense of responsibility.
A rough life has taught Ruka key lessons: to only fight when he has to, to fight smart, and to keep hitting until the person trying to hit him doesn't get back up again. Despite a rare temper, Ruka loathes fighting or excessive violence, and knows killing only as a grim but necessary resort that haunts him. He hates being in pain or causing it, but knows the necessity of defending himself or others, and will retaliate however he can if attacked or threatened. Stubborn and survivalist, he usually seeks to avoid any fights altogether, but will try to end them quickly, cleanly once engaged and won't turn his back until he knows his opponent is down. However, when pushed too far, Ruka may start a fight he is wholly unprepared for, or risk losing control and losing himself altogether in trying to get out of one.
There is no freedom like that the Dark grants, and Ruka embraces it, the sensation of being unlimited. He immerses himself in its shadowy grasp both in and out of combat, but thrives on it in particular when in battle where he fights decisively with his whole self, body and blade. Drawing on the Force, he tends to use brutal displays of Lightning and Telekinesis intermingled with augmented saber and sword combat, saving nearly all his power for short, sprinting barrages meant to devastate rather than wearing down his opponents with smaller attacks. These heavy blows don't always work, however, and even incorporating his environment and tricks with Blackness between bouts, Ruka can very easily find himself in desperate or exhausted situations where his only recourse is to try to flee, bear the brunt of attack, or distract until he can retaliate.
