I Don’t Want You To Be Like Me, I Want You To Be Better (General Aspect)

Having spent the past two years dedicated to teaching at the Velastari temple on Kiast Turel has rededicated himself to walking the Jedi path and now aspires to become a Jedi Master. As a mentor and a parent Turel is always mindful of the example he sets for others. He has learned to temper his brash and passionate nature with wisdom and discipline but it is a constant struggle and he can falter.

While some may view the ex-gangster as hypocritical or unworthy of the Jedi mantle Turel does not shy away from his past misdeeds or his struggles against his very nature. He firmly believes in the ability to choose to be better than your worst mistakes and tries to impress that on those he influences.

Just When I Thought I Was Out (General Aspect)

As a former High Councilor, Turel has tried to stay out of the limelight of politics both in Kiast and the larger Brotherhood, preferring to focus on his family and journey in the Force instead. However, he knows that in a chaotic and often threatening galaxy, a Jedi’s work is never done. So the Sentinel works tirelessly behind the scenes to counter upcoming threats, support the leaders of the Odan-Urr council and promote peace throughout all of Brotherhood space.

In matters where his counsel is sought, Turel is a strong voice for the pragmatic approach, which can put him at odds with his more idealistic counterparts. He also believes in cultivating allies wherever possible to promote the cause of peace, even among former enemies, which can also ruffle some feathers.

Why So Serious? (Personality Aspect)

Turel Sorenn has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor that acts as his second skin. He employs it with mixed results, both in general - particularly to pick at any vulnerabilities or quirks of other people - and in response to stressful situations. While Turel’s use of humor helps him maintain his calm demeanor, it can sometimes get him into trouble, as not everyone appreciates his sass. He reflexively uses situationally inappropriate humor and flimsy bravado as a defense mechanism to hide his stress and fear. Unless Turel focuses on the deception, this defense mechanism rarely fools anyone.

Let He Who is Without Sin... (Personality Aspect)

As a former gangster, Turel is far more tolerant of and prone to indulge in everyday vices such as alcohol, gambling, or cigarras than his Jedi peers. He blends into a crowd of city folk more naturally than a stiff soldier or traditional Jedi and is often seen conspiring with and befriending both dark-sided and light-sided individuals, which makes him as many friends as enemies. Quite simply, he has no issues with anyone who follows his one very simple rule: do not harm or exploit the innocent. Whoever doesn’t will find themselves staring down the barrel of a blaster.

Smoke and Mirrors (Combat Aspect)

As an avid Sabacc player, Turel knows the value of bluffing his own hand and misleading an opponent. He augments his physical skills and Subterfuge with attacks on an enemy’s perception and very mind using Illusion and Mind Trick. He often employs his mental powers to disguise himself and set up ambushes. The ex-gangster uses this bag of tricks to distract, taunt, evade or confuse opponents.

This approach is not without risk, as mental attacks take precious concentration away from the physical reality. Turel also isn’t nearly as clever as he thinks he is; his schemes sometimes blow up in his face.

The Way of the Sentinel (Combat Aspect)

Despite his past history of violence, Turel tries to live up to the Jedi ideal of preserving life. He strives not to fight at all, hoping to neutralize or minimize harm while still accomplishing the mission. The ex-gangster has embraced the tenets of the Sentinel tradition namely avoiding detection where possible and stifling identification by adversaries when it isn’t. He believes the best defense in a dangerous situation is to pass unseen and unknown. This hesitance to resort to violence may cause an impatience in more aggressive allies or be seen as weakness by enemies.

At the end of the day Turel is, after all, just a man who often falls short of his ideals. If pushed too far or backed into a corner and faced with keeping his moral code or protecting those he loves or views as innocent he will choose the latter regardless of consequences.
