Locke stood in the center of the courtyard outside the Temple of Sorrow and analyzed his surroundings. He turned in a slow circle, taking note of the ruins in the courtyard, the trees in the distance, as well as the maintenance droids working at each of the surrounding landing platforms - but he was not here for an audit. He was here to test the combat skills of a newer member of Clan Naga Sadow. Locke checked his datapad again, reviewing the man's information.
The Commander of the Night Hawks was Captain Corvo, or Surec'or'vosen. So, he was a Chiss, and what background his file stated on him showed that he had the keen tactical mind that his species was known for. Locke would have to be wary of that - he did not want to let the man get the best of him. Although the instructions of this "test" outlined it as a combat encounter with no rules, Locke also did not want to kill or seriously injure Corvo. He was not in the business of terminating valuable followers of Sadow. He would have to make sure he didn't do anything that would leave a permanent effect.
Some twinge in the Force took Locke out of his thoughts. Like an instinct, he had the sudden urge to dive-roll to a crouching position, and he did so - just as a blaster shot whizzed through the space his chest had been. Locke cursed silently to himself and ran behind the nearest bit of the ruined old temple - a small stack of ancient stone with a fern sprouting out of the top.
The fern was destroyed by a second shot, it's leaves bursting into flame. Then another hit the stone. After that, there was a pause. Locke took the opportunity to ready his DC-15S carbine and aimed it around the corner, firing several shots in the direction he thought he had been assailed from. Instead, a shot hit the stone wall next to him from a different angle, not too far from where he had been aiming.
Considering his options, Locke thought he had relatively few. With focus, he could determine Corvo's location in the Force, but the Chiss seemed to be repositioning after each shot, and Locke didn't want to give him an opportunity to flank him. He really needed to get some kind of idea of where the other man was. He didn't want to risk getting hit too much, but he needed to do something.
Locke decided to lay down suppressive fire while he retreated toward one of the transports and the towering trees beyond it. He backed away from Corvo's last known position, standing, backpedaling, and firing in wild bursts. He didn't intend to hit anything, but he wanted to make sure he didn't give Corvo an easy shot, either. A blaster bolt whizzed past his head, and then he turned and ducked behind the next obstacle, a slightly taller pillar than the one had been behind before.
In doing so, Locke caught a glimpse of movement heading behind a far stack of rubble, just to the right of where the last shot had come from. "Finally," he muttered. He pulled a grenade from his belt and channeled the Force into his arm so he could throw the grenade further, hurling it near that pile of rubble.
A second before the actual explosion, Locke caught his first clear glimpse of Corvo as the other man ran through the open to put space between himself and the blast. Locke trained his carbine on him, intending to fire several shots over his head, but just before he pulled the trigger the weapon was abruptly knocked from his hands.
Flabbergasted, Locke watched some bird carry away the carbine and drop it well out of reach. He ducked behind cover and examined the scratch where the bird's talons had raked across his hand. He had never expected an animal to interrupt their fight. Regardless, Locke now had a rough idea where Corvo was and needed to decide what to use next: his pistol, lightsaber, or some other tool.
