[Fall of SCEPTER] Rally To Me
Textual submission

Checking incoming messages for the first time while on her mission, Riverche noticed numerous distress and urgent messages starting from a little after 0600 that morning. She had failed and now her allies needed her help. Ran through her mind as she gathered her belongings. Fearing that she may be to late, she set out to investigate the source of the closest signal, about 100 km away in a valley near the outskirts of Estle City. She should arrive just as the sun is setting.

The setting sun behind River highlighted the small training outpost in the valley below that once served as training grounds for SCEPTER and Arcona. The small yard once used for various training exercises now housed encamped soldiers ready to fire at the trapped forces inside. The large, antique doors facing the yard silently stood close, scared from the recent skirmish. The wall surrounding the yard had crumbled in multiple places under the force of the invasion. The broken windows boarded up from the inside blacked the view of the outside world. Not happy not knowing what was on the inside, River dug out her data pad and went to work hacking the security system of the base.

The main communications array was still down, but she was able to use her close range position to establish a link to the computer system on the base. They were still trying to connect to the main system using the same algorithm as the rest of SCEPTOR, so entering the system was not a problem. The security feed showed the insides were still intact and that the survivors had eradicated those that had breached the facility. They were mainly focused near the entry hall facing the yard weapons drawn. Both sides locked and waiting for a break.

Riverche typed a short message to the trapped soldiers before starting to put her datapad away. Buzz, buzz. Glancing at the messages, in the last hour Celahir had tried to reach her over twenty different times. “Not now, busy” she typed before turning the device off again and putting it away.

She carefully made her way to the wall surrounding the yard. Leaning against the wall, she took a deep breath and pulled out her supply of flash grenades. Hope they got the message, Riverche thought as she prepared to throw the first grenade through a hole in the wall.

Running from one break in the wall to the next, River throw grenades into the mix of intruders. One by one they lit the yard in flashes of blinding light. As the last one flooded the area, the main lights of the yard flicked on filling the surrounding area in extremely bright light. The antique doors swung open to let the small flood of SCEPTOR soldiers enter combat with the blinded enemy. Riverche rounded the wall blaster drawn.

Before the enemy had time to react, more then half of them laid lifeless at the feet of the soldiers. Riverche was firing into the crowd of enemies, near the hole in the wall she had used to enter the yard, when one of them decided to rush her. Under the sudden force of the brute, River flew backwards into the wall. She could feel the pressure of a sharp stone pierce her back just under her right shoulder blade.

As she pushed away from the wall, Riverche droped her pistol. Without warning, she firmly thrust her fist into the brute's chest just below his wind pipe. He swung wildly as he stumbled a little gasping for air. Catching himself, he strongly thew his fist at Riverche's face and chest area. Tasting the familiar taste of blood, Riverche took another couple of swings at the brute. Looking her square in the face, he took a deep breath and charged at the defiant Miraluka. Moments before he would have connected, Riverche took a step to the side. Unable to stop, the brute ran head first into the sharp stone sticking out of the broken wall. His lifeless body slide to rest leaving a streak of blood behind.

A familiar hiss of a lightsaber came from the battling group in the center of the yard. A tall figure with his back towards Riverche held the weapon. Raised and ready to drive it into an unsuspecting victim. Riverche quickly picked up her pistol. Her first shot, slightly off, hit the arm holding the saber. The light went out millimeters away from the victims neck. The saber hit the ground as the soldier turned to engage his would be assassin. At the same time the soldier's palm forcefully connected with the assassin's nose, the second shot hit the left side of his back just below the shoulder blade.

The battle quieted just as fast as it had started. The enemy laid in lifeless heaps scattered throughout the yard. Only one of the dead wore a SCEPTOR uniform. The sudden quietness was soon interrupted by the sound of an approaching transporter. “Lights!” A soldier wearing an officer's uniform shouted from the yard.

As on queue, the lights in the yard switched off allowing the night to creep in. “Here!” The officer said handing River the abandoned lightsaber. “Incoming, get ready!”

The group, as one, moved back to the steps in front of the antique doors. The ship turned slightly revealing the Arcona logo as it landed outside the wall. Before touching ground, the loading ramp started to slide open to reveal the faces of the members of the Soulfire Strike Team. Relieved, the soldiers holstered their weapons and scattered to start the clean up process.

Riverche picked up her bag as Celahir approached. “I've been trying to reach you for a while. Saying your busy is not acceptable. We have a mission.”

“Oh!” Riverche pulled out the datapad, while walking up the ramp, to look over the numerous messages filling the screen. “How did you...? Why so...? I don't want to know! I will review the messages after I get cleaned up a bit.”

“Glad you can finally join us. Take a seat and let's begin.” Celahir greeted Riverche as she entered the makeshift meeting room. “We will be landing at this landing site and we know that the survivors are being held in this area of the base.” Pointing to a room on the map display. “We are to get in and out as fast as possible. We stick together, no splitting off.” Looks at Riverche, “That means you. Rayze and Venomous will stay with the ship. Any questions? Good, how long before we land?”

“Any second.” Rayze answered focusing his attention back on the controls.

The craft slowly descended to the landing pad next to the weapons depot. The exhaust from the ship blew the remnants of the recent fight in small tornadoes. The feet gently touched the pad as the ramp started to lower. Celahir and Sashar lead the group down the ramp to the door leading to depot. Repeatedly punching a few numbers in, Celahir proclaimed “Pass codes been changed. River--”

“Here.” Handing him a couple of tools while playing with her datapad. “It's faster then to try to hack the doors.”

Celahir pried open the display panel and crossed a couple of wires. From inside the building, sirens started to blare for a moment before being silenced. “I didn't want --”

“All the doors that are shut are now locked and here is the new code.” Passing the pad to Celahir. The datapad passed through the team before returning to River's waiting hands.

The group quietly made their way down long hallways lit only by the emergency lights. At every intersection, Sashar and Celahir would stop to make sure it was clear before proceeding further, waiting long enough for the majority of the group to catch up. The few enemies roaming the halls were quickly cut down by Sashar's lightsabers.

At one particular intersection, Sashar had just cleared it and was clearing the next. Riverche and Xenna who were bringing up the rear about to cross the path, stopped at the corner as if hitting a brick wall. Looking down the new hall, Riverche saw a blinking light at the far end. “What?” Xenna whispered.

“There's something.” Riverche whispered back. The group started to move again as River turned the corner to check out the light. “I'll catch up.”

“I'm coming with you.” Xenna said following River's example.

At the end of the hallway, a door leading into a small vacant room stood half off it's path. Blaster scars and dried blood decorated the walls and floor. Shelves hung in danger of falling to the ground at any moment. The contents of the desk scattered throughout the room. Pieces of chair littered the floor. But even through the mess in the room, Riverche could see a faint blinking light coming from the back of the room. “We need to go back. We'll get in trouble.”

“One second. I want to check something out.” Riverche responded crossing the room to investigate the light. Reaching behind a pile of debris, River's hand located two round cylinders, a smooth rock, and what felt like a data pad. As Riverche pulled the items out, she realized the cylinders were actually Braecen's lightsabers. The datapad was probably his also. The rock, which was the item that she had originally seen, was a crystal of some kind. She will have to look into it later.

“Lightsabers. What a--” Xenna started to ask.

“They're Braecen's. Let's go.” Sashar's voice from the entrance of the room startled the two girls.

He proceeded to lead the two quickly down the hallway they had ventured into. Around the corner and down the original hall. Down the second hall on the right. A little ways down the third hall on the right, the rest of the group were pinned by enemy forces guarding the prison cells.

Sashar and Xenna lit their sabers. River pulled out two round flash grenades. Almost running to join the group, River prepared to throw the two grenades into the new hall. As the light flashed, most of the Soulfire group rushed at the blinded enemy.

With the enemy slain, one by one the group opened the cell door. As each door opened to reveal only SCEPTOR agents, Sashar's, Celahir's and Wes's faces began to show signs of worry and doubt. Even the younger members were starting to doubt Braecen was even there. The last doors opened more soldiers and no Braecen. Rechecked the rooms, still no sign of him.

Pacing in the last room, Riverche went over every detail of the adventure in her mind. Did they forget something? What was overlooked? The room! From the hallway the crystal shone bright but in the room it was dull as if... She pulled the crystal out of her belt pouch and studied it. Bright again as it should be. “Di'kat!”

Determined to give him a piece of her mind, Riverche walked past the group. Down the hall. Around a few corners and back into the room. The crystal shone bright the entire trip. Even in the room, it was still bright. Scanning the room, she could barely make out what looked like a figure under the debris in the far corner of the room. After placing the crystal back in her pouch for safe keeping, she started to uncover the unconscious, severely hurt Braecen.

“Get him on the ship!” Celahir ordered from the doorway.

Several soldiers flooded the room to assist in carrying the unconscious man out. A broken self was slid, carefully under him for support and six SCEPTOR soldiers, three on each side, in unison, lifted him. River scanned the room one last time before following the group. Nothing, but memories!

What Runs Through Riverche's Mind As She Prepares For War:

Sirens sounded. Orders given. Ships readied for battle. Time to prepare for the chaos of another war. Time to prepare for an adventure into a far away, unknown destination. Time to prove what our team can accomplish in a short amount of time. Every member of the Brotherhood has their own routine to prepare for the trials of war. And it is time for all to run their own separate routines.

Review the orders to determine the answers to the important questions. Who are we fighting this time? What is known of them? Their weaknesses and strengths? What is the goal for us? For them? When do we leave? When are we coming back? Where are we going? What is the place like? What can I expect to see or do there? How are we getting there? For all unanswered questions, research to fill in the blanks.

Pack, pack, and repack. The team depends on everyone doing their job. They come first. Make or get the list of equipment needed for this mission. Check for defects, make sure everything works. Everything fully charged and ready to use as soon as it is unpacked. Order and acquire replacements and special equipment. Pack and label clearly for all, not just for the Miraluka doing the packing. Review the list. Is everything packed? What is missing and why is it missing? Check the orders, again. Does the environment we are about to be sent to require special gear? And is the gear packed?

With the team's gear packed, time to pack personal gear. Look through the closet to choose the most appropriate outfits. Hygiene items tucked neatly in a bag of their own. Decide what activities to bring for down time. Load the datapads with the latest software and research. Weapons loaded and ready for use. Everything works and ready. Review the orders. Is anything forgotten? Are the clothes suitable for the environment? Is there enough for the entirety of the mission or did I leave something out?

Time to meet with the team. Clarify any mis understandings. Ask the unanswered questions. Did the team lead provide more information? Does the new information affect my lists? Do I need to repack something?

With the list finalized, time to head back to repack. Did the team's missing gear finally show up? Do I need to swap out something? Or make a substitute to fill a void? Is the list up to date and copies given to the team lead? Does he/she agree with the list? Did they add or change anything? Better fix the disagreements. Does her personal gear need reviewing? Did she miss anything?

Time to load the equipment and personal effects. Review the lists one last time. Is everything labeled? Can the proper gear be found easily? Is everything packed properly? Let the lead know that the gear is ready to go to the loading area. Go back to her room to grab her personal bag. Look for stray items. Did she forget anything?

Take a deep breath and relax. Everything is packed and ready. All the research has been done. It is almost time to leave the comfort of the Clan's home to defend it. This is what you have signed up for and the reason you are allowed to remain. All the studying and training has lead up to this point. You are needed. You have a direction, a goal, that needs to be meet. And it is time to meet the most recent goal set in front of you.
