Pandala D. Howlader, for your most awesome work during the first Phase of the Crusade I am hereby requesting you to be awarded with a Grand Cross of the Dark Side. You have pushed yourself beyond what dedication to your House should look like, participating in a total of 17 out of 17 events in three months of the Crusade as well as helping Sid and myself at keeping track of members activity. Thank you Howie. Obelisk Prelate Rian Aslar Quaestor of House Taldryan

What can somebody say about the Panda? I could say a lot, and almost none of it would be flattering. But what I will say instead, is the extreme value of Howlader to Taldryan. Despite his protestations to the contrary, Howlader has been by far one of the most outstanding members Taldryan has had in the past few years. Despite having no long history within the House, Howie has taken to Tal like a duck to water, and in his weaker moments even he will admit just how deeply he cares for Taldryan, and how much he wishes it to succeed.

His depth of feeling has been more than backed up by actions though. Participating in every event that has been offered in the Crusade, Howlader’s position as one of the most active members in the Dark Brotherhood is completely cemented. His constant advice, mentoring, and activity on IRC has made Howlader one of the most approachable, and accessible members and Taldryan, and he has worked hard to include younger members of the Dark Brotherhood into conversations and encouraged them to be active in many ways throughout the DB, beyond even the Dark Crusades.

More recently, Howlader has further upped the ante by attempting to help one of Taldryan’s young journeymen through the trials toward earning Dark Jedi Knight, and has recently begun work on a project that will help streamline and encourage more activity and hopefully, promotions, of Taldryan’s newest members.

All of this is of course done, knowing that he has nearly nothing to gain from his activity, but a deep seeded love for the Dark Brotherhood, and Taldryan. It’s with that knowledge in mind, that I would like to recommend Dark Jedi Master Howlader be awarded a Grand Cross of the Dark Side, to let him know that all of his tremendous hard work is appreciated.

What can be said about Howie that wasn’t said about Panda poachers the years over? The insane little man went max for every single event during the Crusades. He screamed his way out of a disqualification which was based on poor judgement, all the while encouraging (or pestering?) all of the new kids to do as much as they possibly can for his adopted home.

I say adopted home because Howie doesn’t usually hail from Taldryan, yet upon his return to activity in the DB he most definitely fit with its mindset and culture of perseverance, excellence, and a strong dislike of idiocy. With those values as the driving force, Howie has gone above and beyond what is expected of an old, inactive, useless OFHer, and done more activities in the Crusades than most leaders from other units. I would say he deserves a promotion to Dark Prophet, but that seems like a long shot; give him a Grand Cross instead!

What can I say about Howie to make the intro to the recommendation near identical to the last two? To say that Howlader is one of, if not, the top performer for Taldryan during the Crusade is a little shocking. To say that someone I didn't know, but for brief mentions and glimpses during my initial time in the Brotherhood, is out performing all of Taldryan's old veterans is quite shocking; and that would be putting it mildly. The fact that Howlader didn't fight for Taldryan's creation or grow from it like many of us have is no secret, and yet he is fighting harder for the House now, when it needs it most, than most of us have managed. This is a fact that makes me extremely proud to be a member of Taldryan, and extremely happy to have someone fight so hard for something I love so much.

I haven't even mentioned the facts that he has had a perfect level of participation, has helped members edit their entries, has encouraged everyone he can to fight for Taldryan's cause, and he has advised our leaders on important issues. The only bad thing I have to say about Howie is that I met him so much later than so many others did. With great appreciation I hereby recommend Howlader for a Grand Cross of the Dark Side. Thank you for everything you've done for Taldryan. OE Chaosrain Taldrya Original Bryar Pimp Dossier #3931

There comes a time in a mans DB career, somewhere around 17 years in, where writing reccs becomes a god damned chore. I just reached that point. Howie does all the things. All of them in the GJW, all of them in Fading Light, just all the god damned things. He participates in other competitions too, and encourages other people to do the things. He earns CFs and Crescents and SA degrees and other such crap. He’s also a good rollmaster and stuff. Howie deserves this Grand Cross of the Dark Side, and if that fact isn't obvious to you? You suck.

Grats Howie.

Additional reasons

This is why we don’t let Yacks go first. He has eloquently summed up Howie’s value to this house and to this clan.

Howie is a key cog in Taldryan’s continuing success based on his active work with the new recruits. Right from day one, they have one of the most experienced DJB members communicating with them and helping them through the processes. Howie stays on top of each recruit (and their eventual masters) so that Tal is able to train up and retain productive clan members.

Aside from his Rollmaster position, Howie is one of the most active communicators in the clan, which is a huge factor in keeping activity flowing. Activity breeds activity, and having a vibrant mailing list and IRC channel is huge in that aspect. Howie is on IRC damn-near 24/7 (so much so that I think he just skips work to be near his home computer) and posts tons onto both the Ektrosis and Taldryan mailing lists, stimulating simple communication between all our members.

He leads from the front, carrying his “Do All The Things (TM)” banner with pride. Without checking the actual stats, I can say with confidence that he participates in more than 90% of all clan competitions and major events. It’s probably closer to 99%, but you get the point. Also, he’s not just a participant for the sake of participating; no, he goes out to win, coming away regularly with medals and placements. This is a panda who takes his role as a leader and a mentor for the young members to heart.

So, like Yacks said, don’t suck. Approve Howie’s GCoDS (or however we’re abbreviating it now). You know it makes sense.

Howie is the bar by which all other members of Taldryan are measured to. He is what everyone should strive towards, including myself. While he can sometimes be...overzealous, his activity is truly astounding and puts just about everyone else to shame.

Everyone in the DB knows that Howie's warcry is "Do All the Things", but I don't think many people outside of Taldryan, or even within it, truly knows how much he lives by that credo himself. Every major competition that has come by recently, Howlader has done every single event. He has been the main "cheerleader" as well for the Clan, pushing everyone through both e-mail and IRC to participate.

On top of all the damn competitions he keeps participating in, he's also held down the fort of Rollmaster, even though he doesn't even think it's a "real position". Taldryan has been kept afloat above the magic number of 40, without many direct recruits, due to the continued hard work that Howie puts into keeping in contact with all of our newer (and even older) members.

Howie is more than deserving of this medal. It's a no-brainer. Congrats!

Primary reason

I don't know how many different types of recommendations I can write for this guy. Part of the reason for that is I have to write them as often as I do, but to be perfectly honest... I probably still don't write them enough. They quite simply just don't make DB members like they used to, and Howie is the perfect example of that. But before I get into the reasons why I am giving Howie this medal, just for fun, I'm going to write out a few of Howie's favourite quotes, which have been repeated hundred of times over, and I'm sure anyone who is familiar with him knows very well.

  • I'm lazy, I don't do things.
  • Activity is for the kids, I'm roster candy.
  • Dammit Yacko, why are you making me do things?
  • Panda!
  • I'll do it after I wash my hair.
  • I need a nap.
  • Hobo?
  • I'm not active, I'm just doing what I think is the bare minimum.

All of those things say a lot about Howie, but the last explains it even more. Howie just thinks he's shirking by at the absolute minimum limit of what he should do in his position. I'm not even going to get into the insanity of his medal obsessions and all he does for Aabs in the MAA's office (since Aabs recently gave him a SB for his work there), but Howie is a man who wears many hats in this Brotherhood, and probably does more under any single one of them than other people do.

Because Howie is a secretly weird combination of hyperactive and awesome, and quite simply: they don't make DBers like him anymore.

Now, lets get into the laundry list of things Howie has done in the last 6 months since I saw fit to give him a medal. Keep in mind that while he's been doing all of these things, he's also been Rollmaster of Taldryan, combined Rollmaster and Proconsul of Taldryan, Special Magistrate and then Praetor to the Master at Arms, as well as a constant thorn in the DGM's side, and I think he's also a grader for a SA course or something. Howie does all those things, and yet he's still managed to participate in a paltry 76 competitions, he's helped run or ran 20 competitions of his own. In the competitions he participated in he earned a total of 25 crescents for excellent entries (.33 Crescents per competition entry isn't bad), as well as having earned over 1200 combined gaming clusters.

Howie somehow has also managed to earn 4 Clusters of Ice in this time, and has completed an ACC battle. I realize compared to the other numbers, those ones look low, but when you realize how badly he hates writing, it's an amazing feat.

Howie's my right hand man. He's as important to Taldryan as he is to the Brotherhood as a whole, and he's pretty awesome in general, though outside of official recommendation correspondence I'll deny ever having said that.

Oh, and he's also going to complain I gave him a medal right now because somehow despite all he's done, he doesn't think he's earned one yet. This is what I have to put up with.

Take your Grand Cross Howie, and shut up, you deserve it.
