Aedile Report 22nd May 2005

Introduction

Greetings Ziost, so it's been a rather eventful week hasn't it? One of our number has finally achieved Dark Jedi Knight, Episode III has now arrived and the Independence Games are now in full swing. I am also pleased to note the insane level of activity coming from Ziost. It is my hope that this also reflects in the IG's.

So without further ado onto business.

Finding the Words - THE RESULTS!

Actually this event was a bit of a surprise to me, I thought the bulk of the submissions would be last minute to snatch every possible word they could get their hands on. Curiously most were received at the beginning!? All I can say is your all over-confident, which makes you all great Dark Jedi :P

So who are our winners? Well I am a little embarrassed to say it's the same two as last week. In fact its IDENTICAL to the last competition standings!? I can only assume you two are determined to out-do each other!

1st Protector Thran Ossus (311 words)

2nd Priest Esca (184 words)

The next closest entry was Dark Jedi Knight Sunflash with 81 words! So an incredible effort and I thank everyone for taking part. Just so your all aware I double checked the words using the Oxford English dictionary with the assistance of my reluctant other half ;P

On one final note I'd like to see these two winners defeated in future competitions, come on people you aren't going to let them win all of them? ;P

NEW COMPETITION - NOT!

This time around there will not be a new competition. There are two reasons for this. First being I am going to be away on my holidays (see later) and because of the IG's (Independence Games). But once I have returned I'll see about releasing another one.

Star Wars Episode III

Now it is just possible that you live in a remote commune in the middle of nowhere, and the only form of contact is via my emails. But as your all probably aware Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith has been released. So with that in mind you may want to wonder off down to the cinema or alternatively get a job working at the cinema or sneak in. Which of course I do not endorse!

So what does your Aedile think of this landmark film? Well I…err…that is to say…Okay I haven't seen it! I hate crowds, it's true I do. It almost borders on obsession but I hate Cinemas crowded with kids throwing popcorn and making wolf whistles every time we see Amidale. BUT there is only so much restraint I have, so come Monday evening I shall get to see it!

Congratulations Dark Jedi Knight Schisca

I am proud to announce that one of our number has earnt his Lightsaber! Schisca has had a long and rocky road and he still has a lot to learn, that said he has wanted this for a long, long time now. Schisca is my student and I have been proud to train him and I hope that he goes on to continued success. It's a very important time in everyone's career in the Brotherhood, it sets you apart from the membership and shows that you are a terrifying force to be reckoned with.

I now release Schisca from his commitments to me. If you see him out and about please offer your congratulations and I hope that we see more reach this important point in their own careers.

Funny thing happened the other day…

There's an event known as the Eurovision Song Contest, it happens once a year and as the name suggests involves the countries of Europe singing to get the most votes. Upon its completion all of Europe give points ranging from 1 through to 12. Most points wins. Now for any of my fellow Europeans let me personally apologise for what I am about to say, because there may be one or two hold it in almost biblical regard.

In theory it's a brilliant contest, I watch it almost religiously not because I find it good in the purist sense. No, I find it highly amusing for all the wrong reasons. Allow me to explain.

The first thing to expect are the hosts. It's ALWAYS one women and one man and they ALWAYS pretend they love each other and ALWAYS crack daft and almost insultingly stupid jokes. The commentator for British television has the same interest in the event I do and takes tremendous pleasure in making fun of the whole thing. On one particular occasion he dubbed the hosts as Dr Death and the Toothfairy, I forget the country but his description was very accurate!

After you get use to these two (which on this occasion were dubbed he called them Ant and Shrek) you then get the pleasure of the acts. Sometimes they are considered vaguely normal, this is rare and welcomed but more often than not they are far from normal. I recall one act where some country lie Sweden or Norway dressed up in what can only be described as the Borg from Star Trek. And no I am not kidding. Last years winner was a buxom young women who sang, danced, shrieked and even looked like Xena warrior princess. Again, I am not joking and I would encourage you to look it up if there is even an iota of doubt.

The highlights this year were 90% of the songs featured drums. No, not terribly strange. However when you consider that almost all the acts featured HUGE drums the size of oil containers and the main singer would half way through an act disappear to play them! There was also a man who had dressed in tin foil, wore platforms and plastered makeup on himself including black finger nails! The most bizarre act had to be Moldova. They were singing about an old granny (I kid you not) and to add weight to their performance they even had an old granny in a chair with ANOTHER BLOODY DRUM! The crowd went wild when the old granny actually left her rocking chair to play said drum.

Just so you know I am not biast, the British act was equally insane, though we didn't feature an old granny. It was some young women who obviously decided to wear her underwear instead of clothes and strutted about the stage singing some authentic gypsy-esque song.

So after a couple of hours of cheesy host jokes, incredibly bizarre music and the utterly pointless mini films between performances we then get onto the voting. This you would think would be straightforward. People in each country would vote for what must be the best song? Nope, I am afraid not. Firstly you have to consider that most the countries that vote use an 'elected' panel. They do not vote for the best, no that's plain silly. They vote for their friends and to make political statements. Ha! I hear you cry, utterly nonsense!

Well lets take Greece and Cyprus. Neighbours and best friends. They gave each other maximum points. But maybe their respective songs were good? Possibly but when you consider they have done EXACTLY the same point scoring since the contest began you begin to doubt the sincereity. Iceland and Norway tend to vote for each other, where as Ukraine got some complimentary points because of their independence from Russia and their love for the colour orange (don't ask). France almost never give us any points and Spain ALWAYS give maximum points to Portugal. Most of the countries vote for their neighbours. I am not an expert on songs but even I knew who was going to get maximum points from different countries! To see who will do well, all you have to do is look at a map of Europe!

Oh incidently the strange Granny song complete with rocking chair and drum managed to finish an impressive 7th or there abouts and perhaps reveals just how insane the whole event truly is!

Holidays!

I have already emailed you, the masses but I thought I'd better mention it again. I am going on holiday and will be leaving Wednesday evening. Though it's not quite the tropics it is a lovely place I have down South. My primary objective is to drink wine (shock horror gasp!) and not have to worry about work. I will be back on Tuesday evening of the following week. You can of course still email me, but I wont be in a position to reply till I return. I would encourage you to speak to Rakhai or Braecen in my absence.

Dates:

Wednesday 25th April till Tuesday 31st April.

Personal Fighter!

I don't normally bother with pointing out any personal achievements but this is a little different. I won a tournament a month or so back which earnt our clan a squadron of TIE Defenders. Speaking of which Rakhai won his Xwing Alliance tournament and one us a SECOND TIE Defender squadron. No other clan can boast such a devastating fighter complement. The winner of each tournament gets to choose their own fighter. Though I do not know what our very own Quaestor has chosen I picked a TIE Defender. An excellent all rounder and highly efficient dog fighting vessel. The reason I am mentioning this is because of what happened when I first joined the Brotherhood.

When I first joined I said I was going to win myself a TIE Advanced, maybe even a Missileboat. My dreams were shot to pieces by certain influential members. I am living proof that this was an incorrect statement, that if you try hard enough you can achieve anything. So regardless of what your hopes are keep trying and you may just achieve them. Don't let anyone persuade you otherwise!

Final note

It's been a busy week but let me wish you all good luck in the Independence Games, I know we are hoping to achieve a lot and show just how far Exar Kun has come since the troubles.

Your Servant,

Godo Nurok
