Chamber of Justice Communique #030a
On this day, January 12, 2010 of the Liberated Brotherhood, I the Justicar of the Brotherhood now announce the punishment that this Chamber lays upon Brent "Archangel" Ligur Victae. Upon the conclusion of fair and just proceedings, this Chamber finds you:
On the Charge of Plagiarism - You did knowingly and willfully submit a graphic image to the Rite of Supremacy competition as your own which you copied from another artist without due credit. The Chamber finds you GUILTY.
On the Charge of Cheating - You did knowingly and willfully attempt to exploit the benefits of your plagiarized work in the Rite of Supremacy competition. The Chamber finds you GUILTY.
Sentencing for the party is as follows: -Demotion from Sith Battlemaster to Sith Warrior -Letter of Reprimand -Six Months Probation
The terms of probation are thus: -The guilty party may not receive promotion, appointment to position, or any citation or honor of merit without the explicit permission of the Justicar
Chamber of Justice Communique #030b DB vs Archangel - Justicar's Opinion
A complaint was brought to the Grand Master which mentioned that the defendant's graphics submission for the Rite of Supremacy was very similar to an image on Deviant Art. The Grand Master brought this to the attention of the Justicar, who initiated an investigation. The Deviant Art image and Rite of Supremacy submission were found to be nearly identical. The Deviant Art image was posted in 2007, on an account which did not belong to the defendant.
In the course of the investigation, the Justicar sent an inquiry to the defendant, asking about the image. In his response, the defendant admitted plagiarizing the image. Claiming a lack of time to complete a fully original graphic, the defendant acknowledged that he claimed another artist's work as his own, knowing full well this act ran contrary to the Dark Covenant.
The Chamber convened and decided to charge the defendant with Plagiarism and Cheating, for his plagiarized image was submitted to an official Brotherhood-wide competition. The defendant was notified of the charges, and plead guilty to all counts. The Chamber of Justice then convened again to discuss sentencing. Past first-offense plagiarism cases have been punished by a Letter of Reprimand and Probation (see #014 DB vs Ashura, #027 DB vs Krandon). However, past cases of cheating in a Brotherhood-wide competition have additionally carried the penalty of demotion (#014 DB vs Ricco Vao). Taking these precedents into account, along with the fact that the defendant committed this act in full knowledge that it was strictly illegal, the Chamber decided on a harsher penalty. Therefore, the defendant was sentenced to a one-grade demotion, given a Letter of Reprimand, and six months of Probation.
Competitions are the lifeblood of activity in the Dark Brotherhood, and they are based on the basic assumption of fair play. When work is plagiarized in an attempt to cheat in sanctioned Brotherhood competitions, it is a violation which assaults every member of our organization. It undermines the trust all our members have in our system, and therefore must garner harsh punishment.

So will this effect the results of who won between Taldryan and CSP? Was his the one that came in 1st place in that?
Yes, his was the entry that came in first place in that event - and yes it will change the results. As to how...you'll have to wait for Muz to give those details, he's running that show.
To me a lot of the entries seemed to borrow something from other parts. What's the limit to that? Can we crop other pictures and photographs on the net to make a picture of our own? Just curious.
My understanding of 'borrowing' components for an image, based on the discussion that went on due to this CoJ case, is this: using individual components to create an original composite image is generally acceptable, so long as due credit is given to the original author/creator of the individual components.
Yes, the Dark Covenant prohibits, "...submitting any plagiarized work as your own or failing to give appropriate credit to the author of any work." So if you find an image you want to use as a base for your own graphic, you have to give credit to the original artist (and cite the image). However, judges will always give "bonus points" (if you will) to completely original artwork over modified images created by someone else.
Thanks for the info.
I imagine that using stock images, which artists/photographers put up on the internet in order for other people to take them and adapt/use them (usually without any restrictions beyond giving them credit for the original image) also falls under that heading.
Awesome, one T:F ragequit and one case of cheating caught; and its only been almost 2 weeks in so far! :P lol
w00t! Wonder what the other three'll bring, hmm Raiju? =P
"However, judges will always give "bonus points" (if you will) to completely original artwork over modified images created by someone else."
Yeah, you'd think that. But apparently that's not the case.
I think Muz likes fancy hand-drawn stuff... I'm gonna try drawing some topless Jedi whores next round, It'll be awesome.
hahaha nice shad :P
I'd vote for that shad.
"Yeah, you'd think that. But apparently that's not the case."
Solus - obviously I meant to a point, quality still matters. An original image will not automatically beat a modified image if there is a quality gap.
"Solus - obviously I meant to a point, quality still matters. An original image will not automatically beat a modified image if there is a quality gap."
Again, not exactly true given how things sussed out.
Solus I'm not here to criticize cos I have my faults, but why does everything seem to be/end up in an argument with you dude. Archangel submitted an image that was not his and didn't cite an original images or give the original author the credit. I'm not kissin up to Kir or the judges, but they had no idea that is was a copy. So thereby making you statements pointless and unnecessary given to the present situation. Lets just worry about our next opponent , alright brotha?
Never mind Solus, Ood just clarified your argument so I guess I'll say this... Why does an image that shows a battlefield (Solus') get beaten by an image that shows a mountain and a TIE Interceptor (Vodo's). So now as a friend and brother of mine would say... Laf. Sorry Solus I should of clarified before I got on your case.
This isn't exactly the proper forum to be complaining about why someone placed below another...if people have issues with that sort of thing, then you can bring it up to the people who are running the competition. The comments section on the news page is never the place to have those sorts of "discussions"
While Halc is simply feeding into it :P, I'm going to have to agree and say keep this crap to PMs and email.
Indeed, this has nothing to do with where I or anyone else specifically placed, it has to do with the accuracy of Kir's statement only. I'm not complaining on my behalf either, as a Nova is a Nova, Bronze, Silver, or Gold. =P
I don't understand how people can ruin other people's fun like this :( It saddens me that things such as this have to occur in order to safeguard our escape from the real world here.
BIAS! SHENANIGANS!
