Some fun Thanksgiving facts, both for those of us in the US and Canada!
The first Thanksgivings!
* The first Canadian Thanksgiving was in 1578, during explorer Martin Frobisher's attempts to find the Northwest Passage to the Orient. They celebrated safe passage to the New World.
* The first American Thanksgiving was in 1621, after the Wampanoag Indians helped the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock learn to cultivate the land and fish, saving them from starvation.
National Holiday!
* The Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be a National Holiday in 1957.
* President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill into law making Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1941.
Sports and Parades!
* Both countries have football on Thanksgiving! (not the European kind with the round ball either)
* The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest parade is Canada's main parade and is broadcast nationally.
* Macy's Parade is the big one in the US.
Meals!
* Canadian Pumpkin Pie tends to be spicy, American Pumpkin Pie tends to be sweeter.
* During the American Revolution Americans loyal to England moved to Canada and brought the Turkey tradition with them. So remember as you're eating your Turkey, you can thank an American for that part :p
Happy Thanksgiving to Canada from one of your neighbors to the south! Our Holidays are pretty similar even though they're a few weeks apart, enjoy your day off work tomorrow!
Did not know that about the Turkey thing, actually. 'tis pretty cool, and yes, my belly thanks those American pioneers who brought such a tradition north :D
Ben Franklin (among others)actually lobbied pretty hard for the Turkey to be our national bird. I am glad they lost, for the sake of feasting and sammiches after. It wouldn't be right to be eating the national bird and all that.
