I have had a few questions and a bit of confusion about the current wiki competition, so I thought I would compile a bit of an FAQ to help everyone out (and hopefully prompt more people to enter.)
*Q: * Where do I save my template? How do I submit my template?
*A: * Save them to the wiki! If they are on there they will automatically be considered in the running for this competition.
*Q: * How do I get started?
*A: * Letâs say your username on the wiki is Jack. To start your template you would type Template:JackTalk into the search bar on the left hand side of any DJBWiki page and hit enter. Because this page doesnât exist the search result will give you a red link offering to create the article.
Clicking the link will give you a blank edit box, into this box you enter the wiki code required to start your template. I suggest using mine as a template, the code for which I will supply here to save you some time. Remember to change it to fit your character and personality. <pre> { {Talk |image= |color=#333333 |color2=#000000 |textcolor=#BBBBBB |name=Windos |sig=Wiki Tribune |time= { { {time}}} |text= { { {text}}} }}<noinclude></noinclude></pre>
Be sure to look here for full instructions
*Q: * Why isnât the link on my name working?
*A: * The text entered into the name section (in the example above it shows Windos) creates a link to your user page, so if your user name is Jack you must enter Jack as your name in order for the link to work properly.
*Q: * What if I donât want that displayed as my name?
*A: * You have two options:
Ask a member of the Wiki Staff to change your username, or
Add the nick option to your template (|nick=) this will make the link point to whatever is in your name option but display the text in the nick option.
*Q: * Okay, I have my template. How do I use it?
*A: * Assuming you are Jack, and have created the page Template:JackTalk then to use your template on a talk page you only have to type:
<pre> {
|text=Sample message}}</pre> There are two things to notice here. Firstly I didnât have to type âtemplate:â this is because when using curly brackets the wiki automatically looks for pages in the template namespace.
Secondly after time= I wrote five tilde (~). Most of you would know by now that using four tilde is how you traditionally sign comments on talk pages, this shows your user name followed by the date and time. Using five however omits the username and only shows the date and time; perfect considering the template already creates links to your userpage and talk page.
*Q: * What do these things look like when you have a discussion using them?
*A: * Have a look for yourself.
