Hey Everyone,
I wanted to send out a quick note to make a clarification on DJB communication platforms. We have our beloved email, we have our wonderful and stable undernet mIRC channels, and we have the new'ish world of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp is a phenomenal program that has streamlined communication between leaders and members of our club. But, WhatsApp is also tied to a phone number. Some members and some leaders are going to be uncomfortable providing their phone number to "magical" internet friends. I also know that many members are uncomfortable sharing their number with underage members. Because of this, WhatsApp cannot be a mandatory requirement for positions or usage within our club. Please ensure you comply with this quasi-directive. Thanks!

Good call, Pravus - good to see the DC keeping up with these things! :)
Just be glad you are not on the same WhatsApp as Oberst. If you do find your way there, make sure your settings is so that it does not auto-download pictures he sends...
Other than that, WhatsApp has been amazing for Tarentum!
For sure, WhatsApp is the way to go. Still, if we're all gonna start using it, we definitely do need to be careful about rules and such.
You can also get a free Google Voice number if you're uncomfortable. There are a few other cool forms of communication that work cross platform, but at the time, it was simply the best at what it did. Hopefully we can keep open minds as we look to move forward with communication technology and don't get tied down to using programs that were developed over 10 years ago. :)
mIRC turned 20 today ;)
I have a personal preference towards minimizing the number of platforms needed, but emails, mIRC and WhatsApp are all great tools that we all use frequently in Odan-Urr. Though, I prefer mIRC as my go-to application. Good to see these things addressed.
IRC on port 80 with a decent web GUI and you have Whatsapp + mIRC with no phone number. Instant succes! Hmm I should start coding this. :)
Something like BBM, which is also cross-platform and free, may be a better tool to keep things a little more on the private-end. Also, not everyone can get a google voice number, so again, everyone needs to keep the privacy of their members in mind with these programs. We have had numerous harassment issues between members in the past, and coupled with some underage members, is a dangerous brew. So all leaders needs to keep these points in mind when trying to use new forms of communication.
Kik is safer i suppose, although KiK tends to forget to remind me if i get a message... and since i rarely use it sometimes i dont check it for days.
"You can also get a free Google Voice number if you're uncomfortable."
I have a Whatsapp tied already to my own private number which I only share with family and a very few friends. I can't setup another phone number.
Google Voice also apparently only gives out new numbers to those in the US, Sil, so you're borked either way :P
I like to think of the Plagueis summit as magical... especially Viv.
I could say that Skype would be useful. Yet it does take alot of memory on your mobile applications storage :/
Skype for Mobile runs horribly on my phone, but I'm not sure if that is an issue for everyone or just me.
Oh. Sucks to not be from the US. Didnt realized that was the case, sorry.
Kik is cool for like online dating sites, I guess.
Again, WhatsApp isnt perfect, it was just the best cross platform international platform 4 years ago when we wanted a better way to communicate between members of the summit that lived in England/Amsterdam and members of the summit in america. Obvioisly now there are a lot of ways to do so. With more privacy options. Same reason most of you refuse to look at irc alrernatives--i find nothing wrong with whatsapp and it's where everyone I communicate with already is.
The servers are snappy, image sharing is easy (Thank god for Obersr-filters) and .99 cents to support is not a big deal.
Completely understand it not being for everyone. I was experimenting with HipChat at my office and really like it as an irc like service that works seamlessly on android/ios, mac/pc, and has a really awesome interface not dependent on 20-year old relay chat protocols. Plus and minus all around. Lots of options. Open minded towards new solutions ftw
irc will die eventually
"Oh. Sucks to not be from the US. Didnt realized that was the case, sorry." lol. No reason to be sorry - I am glad I don't live in the US :D
"i find nothing wrong with whatsapp"
That is your opinion. I do find a lot wrong with whatsapp (mostly security and privacy issues) - I do not want to hand out my phone number to everyone. On top I would not be amused if someone from America suddenly called me at 4 am in the morning, just because they believe that the world is flat and different timezones do not exist.
I don't mind KiK or hangouts. ;)
Both of you just count your lucky stars that neither of you have to live in the UK :P
I am personally kind of surprised WhatsApp took off so much when we have Hangouts/GoogleChat, but then I sort of went with the flow and began using WhatsApp and it is a nice program.
The security concerns are a very real issue, though, and could easily lead to a lot of harassment. So that is something we definitely need to be wary of and always thinking about.
I trust the people that I what'sapp with. If I didn't, I just wouldn't what'sapp with them. And by trust I mean: they are not going to call me, and I am not going to call them. Most of the people I communicate with in the club, I can communicate with over various means. To include PS4 games/chat, mirc, what'sapp, battle.net...you get the point. I just assume they would send a message, and if I didn't get it in time, then something more important came up! That's just my opinion on what'sapp though.
