Emissary Staff Changes

Hi, all! In my post last week, I mentioned there would be staffing changes coming to the Emissary’s office.

I’m making two major changes to how Magistrate positions will operate on the Emissary Staff. This is mainly in response to feedback we’ve gotten through the Leadership Feedback Form about there being a shortage of positions where members can gain experience in leadership roles.

First, Magistrate positions will now be for one-year terms instead of permanent. For the sake of continuity, hiring dates will be staggered so that we hire a new Magistrate every six months. Nora will be staying on as a Magistrate until the end of September (barring unforeseen circumstances).

Second, yes, that means we’re hiring for a Magistrate to the Emissary.

If you want to skip straight to the application form… too bad. Reading walls of text I post will be an integral part of being a Magistrate. If you aren’t into that, you’re probably not going to do well on the Emissary Staff.

Before I get into the details of the position, I want to make one thing clear: working for the Emissary Staff does not mean doing one-to-one recruitment at this time. As I mentioned in Emissary #7.1, ramping up our social media presence is a bigger priority at the moment. I don’t expect our focus to shift to one-to-one recruitment within this position’s term.

What You’ll Do

The main responsibilities a Magistrate will have for this hiring cycle are to help with newsletter creation and social media publishing. Both jobs require certain sets of skills that you’ll need to learn as you go, if you don’t have them already, including:

  • Researching and writing content for social media posts
  • Writing newsletter columns
  • Creating graphics from approved templates for use in newsletters and social media posts (note: this won’t require the same level of “graphics skills” as working for the Herald Staff, but will require access to graphics software like Photoshop or GIMP and a basic understanding of how to use it)

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Organising Emissary-sponsored events, such as competitions and RP sessions
  • Gathering feedback from other Brotherhood leaders and members about how the Emissary Staff can best support them in their role
  • Creating SEO-ified content for the public-facing Brotherhood home page

What You’ll Need

There are two hard requirements for applicants to the Magistrate position.

  • Consistent presence online via email and Discord, including on specific days of the week. The social media aspect of the Emissary Staff requires a regular posting schedule to be fully effective, adding “able to post on specific days” to the typical “able to respond to messages within 24h” requirement for Brotherhood leadership positions. Meeting that schedule consistently is my top priority for 2025, and will be one of the core duties for this position
  • Able to hit the ground running and learn new skills as you go. Emissary Staff-related content creation is more technical than the Brotherhood’s other creative activities, and often has fixed deadlines. We’ll do our best to train you on the more technical aspects of our work, but it’ll be up to you to put effort in to learn, too.

Besides those two requirements, there are a few guidelines:

  • There is no minimum rank requirement for this position. If you’re a Journeyman who’s interested in working for the Emissary Staff and think you’ve got what it takes, apply!
  • For this round of hiring, preference will be given to members who don’t already have another position. As I noted at the beginning of the news post, this opening is meant to give more members a way to get leadership experience. Already having a position won’t automatically disqualify you (and shouldn’t prevent you from applying), but it might act as a tiebreaker between equally qualified applicants.
  • Experience with design software would be a bonus.
  • Experience with social media marketing would be a bonus.

How to Apply

Click on the link to fill out the Emissary Staff Application. We’ll be taking applications until Sunday, March 23 at site reset, and hopefully bringing our new team member in the following week.

Best of luck to all applicants!

This is great that we're creating more opportunities for our members to experience the various Council staffing roles! I hope you get everyone applying!

TL;DR: - if you needed this, don't apply :p
