The new Covenant - Effective January 1, 2017

Members of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood -

It is my extreme honor to announce that the new and improved Covenant is live and effective as of today, January 1, 2017.

I have long held out that the Covenant is a document unlike anything to be seen in similar online organizations. The DB has set a high standard for establishing rights and duties of members and leaders, and the Covenant is the backbone of that. I have been ever proud to be a part of its creation and re-creation, and I say without intending any hubris or ego that this is the finest project that I have been a part of in my 21 years as a member.

This new Covenant goes a long way to clarify our organization and the rights of members. It is more user-friendly in that we removed as much legalese as possible and tried hard to keep things simple. To me, one of the most important improvements is in the Judicial section, where we finally codified a hodgepodge of CoJ rules and precedent from 50-some CoJ cases. Overall, my hope is that the new Covenant brings more clarity to everything we do, especially in the CoJ.

I am truly grateful for all of those who assisted with this long project. The process took nearly two years. I created the initial drafts and circulated them for revisions and comments to multiple groups of members with different focuses and influence, including the Star Chamber, the former Justicars, the current and former Grand Masters, 25 influential members, the Dark Council, Consuls, and finally to all of the members at large. Hundreds of comments were received and addressed during the process, which permitted for the Covenant to be improved greatly. There are simply too many individuals involved to list them here, but please know that if you helped in any manner, you are appreciated.

If you have not had a chance to review the Covenant, I would urge you to do so. You can find the new Covenant at this link. Many thanks to Alaris for converting the Cov to the wiki and Slagar for helping me get it to the right spot.

Happy New Year to all of you!

Jac Cotelin

And by the way: we removed the work "Dark" from the title of the document. So, instead of "Dark Covenant of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood" it is now "Covenant of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood." The abbreviation will just be "Cov" instead of what some people would use as "DCov".

Jac

It's been great watching this finalize. Changes fkr the better.

So, just looking over the first part quickly before going to sleep, there seems to be some discrepancy between section 1.05(a) and 1.05(c), the first one says if there's no unit leader or second-in-command eligible to vote the Star Chamber will appoint a representative, the second one says that the unit will be deemed ineligible to vote if neither the leader nor the second-in-command are ineligible to vote.

Huzzah for the Cov!

Job well done, Jac.

Wahoo! Very exciting to see this go into effect. Thank you so much Jac and everyone else who helped get it to this stage!

kewl

Great work guys. I know such an undertaking required massive effort. Your dedication is respected and appreciated!

@Malik: it appears that 1.05(a) is outlining the process of voting and who can vote or be appointed to vote, while 1.05(c) is defining what a quorum is for the purpose of being able to hold a vote in the first place. The former has a process for appointing a person to vote in the case of a vacancy, the other is just stipulating that a vote can't be called if there are two many vacancies.

JST in time for the New Year!

Hooray for the new Covenant! Hooray for transparency! ^^

Woot new Covenant now active!

@Slagar but they still contradict each other then, because 1.05(c) still says the position will be treated as vacant if both a unit leader and a second-in-command are ineligible to vote, in which case there'd be no reason for the SC to appoint a member for it.

Great work to all that helped bring this new covenant to life!

@Malik: It will be treated as vacant for the purpose of calculating whether or not a quorum has been reached.

So they get a vote but is treated as vacant? That makes no sense to me.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, best Covenant ever. Very fulfilling to see it. I had the pleasure of being involved in the first, as well as this iteration. Our leadership has sincerely given us a great reward with it.

This, topped with Jac hosing Taldryan... best Jac ever. :)

Awesome work. Thank you, Jac and team.

@Malik: "Quorum: the minimum number of members of an assembly or society that must be present at any of its meetings to make the proceedings of that meeting valid." Looking at how that section is written, and given that it is specifically addressing quorum calculation as opposed to voting (which is handled in the section on voting), the second section is just outlining how to calculate whether or not a a quorum has been achieved to allow for a vote to take place.
