I am the artist formerly known as Qormus and I have the distinct honour of being chosen by Bubba and Atra to be the first holder of the reimagined position of Emissary.
A little about me. My name is Justin, I’m 42 and I live in Australia. After graduating from University in 2006, I entered the IT industry where I held a variety of operational roles from desktop and application support to server administration and software development. For the last several years, I have operated my own web design and development business.
I joined the DB almost 10 years ago as a member of what was then House Plagueis. I’ve remained in the Clan while active and have been a BTL, Quaestor, and until a few days ago, Proconsul. I’ve also held numerous staff positions including M:HM, M:Voice, M:DGM, P:HM and currently Left Hand of Justice.
In my first report, I will detail my vision for the position, give you a taste of what is in store, and open applications to find willing people who can help bring this vision into reality.
There are no guarantees in life, and my plans as Emissary are no exception. As Yoda once said:
No plan survives contact with the enemy, and we must remain flexible, but I am putting a framework in place that I hope will ensure that the Brotherhood continues to thrive for many years to come. It will be a tremendous effort, not just by myself and the Emissary staff, but by every member of the DB from the Grand Master on down.
My strategy revolves around what I call the Three Rs.
Retain, Recruit and Reengage
We need to make some changes to remove the pain points that cause our members to transfer to the rogues. Once that is addressed, we can turn our attention to the job of recruiting new members. Finally, and running in conjunction with the first two, is reminding inactive members that we still exist. These are people who once dedicated tremendous amounts of time to us, and they already know who we are and what we do. By encouraging them back into the fold, we can tap into a source of members who are ready to contribute immediately.
Below, you’ll find a list of early projects that my office will work on. This is not an exhaustive list. There are several other projects, but I will wait a while before making any announcements.
Beginning early in the new year, we will release a survey asking a variety of questions about your experiences in the DB and what you feel we can improve on. We will publish the results of this survey a few weeks after it closes.
If there is a pain point that is annoying our members, a survey can help identify it, allow us to measure its impact and then, decide how best to address it. This will be an annual event so it will also allow us to compare results year-on-year. This way we can measure how effective our efforts are in a variety of areas.
At present, we have the Scroll of Indoctrination and Scroll of the Master for those who recruit new members into the DB or help them reach JM4. This is nice, but we can do more. Watch out for possession rewards that will be granted to those who recruit new members who remain clanned for a specific period.
Last year, we sent a newsletter to our inactive members which proved quite beneficial with several returning to the active roster. The Emissary will take over responsibility for the newsletter and beginning on January 1, we will publish a new edition of the Rogue Newsletter every quarter.
It will highlight the achievements of the clans and their members. An example would be the results of the recent vendetta and the high-level sacramental and elder promotions awarded in its wake.
We will employ emotional storytelling. The Brotherhood isn’t just a place where Star Wars fans gather, it is a community and that is something we will highlight. If we excel at not just listing the accomplishments of our members but also telling the story of how their contributions have impacted the club, that is captivating content. It will teach a little about our members and highlight their vital contributions to our community. Just look at the love shown to Sarin when he was awarded the first Dantes Spear. This is something we should be shouting from the rooftops.
We will also publish a quarterly newsletter to our clanned members. It will include similar information to that contained within the Rogues Newsletter, but more targeted to active members. Watch out for that early next year.
The Communications Tribune will be responsible for developing and enacting a coherent social media strategy. This will highlight the work of our valued members and act as a way to tempt people to take a closer look at who we are and what we can offer.
Recruitment isn’t just the responsibility of the Emissary, but all members. Most new members who stick around have a connection to an existing member. I believe that developing a strategy and policy towards recruitment will aid in helping our members target people they know who might be interested in what we can offer. There is more to the policy than this, but that can wait until later.
What you saw above is but a taste of what I have in store over the next year or two. I’ll need a lot of help to make these plans a reality, which brings me to staffing.
I am authorised for three slots. The Communications Tribune, a Praetor and one Magistrate. I am now opening up applications for the Praetor and Magistrate slot. I want to move fast on staff so applications will remain open until midnight, site time, on December 7.
I have no specific requirements for these positions. I want the best people for the job, not those who have been here the longest. I also need people who are willing to commit. Many projects that I intend to implement will take weeks or months to complete, and having someone who comes in for a short time only to leave mid-project could compromise our efforts. Of course, real life will always take precedence and things happen, but I need people who are willing to commit to at least six months in the role, and preferably longer. There are no term limits for my staff, so I hope that the successful applicants will enjoy long spells in the Emissary office.
The Emissary will also be taking responsibility for the #welcome channel from the HM, so all members of the staff will be required to greet new members on the server and help them get authenticated.
If you have any questions about either role, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on Discord. I’m always happy to answer questions.
Emissary Staff Application Form
Nora will continue as Communications Tribune. She is bright and extremely energetic and will do amazing things with our social media engagement. Her first job will be to formulate a social media strategy that she can implement starting in the new year.
The position of Praetor will work the same way it does for other positions on the Council. Specifically, you will work closely with me to deliver the various projects this office will produce over the coming months. This includes projects that are worked on by many people including clan members and the Council, as well as your own depending on skill set and priorities.
To begin with, the Magistrate will be a generalist. As Bubba said, the role of the Emissary will be shaped largely by its first occupant. I want the structure of the office to remain fluid while we settle in and see what does and does not work. My original idea was to dedicate a Magistrate to a specific task, but for at least the first few months, I need someone willing to be flexible and work on different tasks.
Early on, you’ll help with the annual member survey, the rogue and member newsletters, and the recruitment strategy. You’ll be a jack of all trades, then as we start delivering, we will begin to narrow your focus based on your preferences, skill set and the needs of the office.
I want to offer my most sincere thanks to Bubba and Atra for trusting me to undertake this important task. It will take a lot of work, not just from myself and the staff, but from everyone. We all have our parts to play in ensuring the continued success of the DB and with a lot of blood, sweat and tears, I do not doubt that we can sustainably grow the DB so that elderly members like Other Mav can still serve long into their twilight years.

Well, it sounds like Other Mav has mastered the art of bringing justice to the DJB while simultaneously perfecting the art of rolling through the hallways of the nursing home with a gavel in hand. Who knew maintaining stability could be so mobile and multi-tasking-friendly? May the Force (and the wheelchair brakes) be with him!
Great Report! So very much looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish :D
Great report! I look forward to seeing what you do with this position Quormus!
