Introduction

Greetings Dark Jedi Brotherhood!

Wasn’t quite sure when this would be ready but since our Seneschal James Lucius Entar is one talented dude this is ready much earlier than I had anticipated. Shout out to Turel Sorenn who was the most recent catalyst for this idea.

The short version is that we are going to split what is now called “DB Gaming” into two channels. One channel will be heavily moderated and restricted only to matchmaking activity. The other will function only as a discussion for gaming related topics.

The challenge has always been a balance between allowing people to chat with each other about gaming but also not drowning out the activity of those looking to match with other members. I believe this should help resolve that issue.

Additionally, it also means members can choose to be part of one or both of these channels. If you do not want to be part of the overall gaming chat, you are no longer forced to read through those messages to participate in gaming activities.

DB Gaming Announcements

This is the new Telegram channel. It is not read only but the Fist staff will be heavily moderating this channel. The best comparison I can think of is that it will function everyday like DB Gaming was historically run during vendettas. Messages will be restricted to those looking for gaming activity, organizing that gaming activity and/or a quick message to your opponent or opponents after a match.

We are also moving all Fister Roboto announcements to this channel. This includes for the PvP queue and the PvE/O Party tool. This will be the channel anyone who is engaging in gaming activity will be required to join.

Lastly, we are also asking members to utilize the party tool for FFA organization. Every member looking for credit in a FFA should join the party created by the host of that activity. The Rites of Combat will be updated to reflect this change when the updates are made regarding the new channels.

DB Gaming Chat

With all of the matchmaking activity being moved to a new channel, DB Gaming is going to be renamed DB Gaming Chat. I think the name describes itself, chat about gaming. One of the major benefits is we don’t need to restrict chat in this channel during vendettas. Also, joining this channel will become optional.

I will be turning on the ability to share multimedia links and pictures. But, I’m not going to turn on stickers and GIFs. I am a GIF fan and user myself but I want this to be gaming chat, not gaming GIF spam.

All of the other rules for the chat remain in place and this will still be monitored closely by the Fist staff. This does not become the wild west, everyone is expected to remain on topic for gaming and to be respectful of each other.

Go Live

This change will officially take place on 4/8 at around 1800 site time (we have to give James to work his magic).

At that time, I will provide the invite link to the new channel as an announcement in the newly minted DB Gaming Chat. The links to all of the chat channels on the website will be updated as well.

Conclusion

My hope is that this helps us continue to grow as a gaming community. The easiest way to think about this change is that we are splitting matchmaking and general gaming chat into two different channels. None of the rules are changing in any substantial way. I look forward to any feedback our gamers have to offer and purposefully built in some time for it to come in before implementation.

A very interesting change that sounds like it will be helpful for both causal gaming and competitions during major events.

Sounds like a good change to make things clearer for new, existing, and returning members.

I think I've written 3 or 4 responses to this already and each time I wind up arguing myself out of a position by an argument I made to myself. I'm not sure if that's a sign of a healthy mind or not, but that's beside the point.

I'm torn on this - I think if we are able to keep new or casual gamers in the "Gaming Chat" channel, we can maintain a health sense of community in that channel. If we lose "conversions" from people only joining the "Announcement" channel without joining the actual community-based channel, we stand to lose in the long run.

As it is now, I absolutely see the value in making the Fister Roboto announcements more visible, especially mid-evening when the channel is usually the most active with people talking about the new gaming news/hype, but I also don't want to lose new people to the community who only are monitoring the announce channel.

If we are looking at further Fister Roboto improvements, it would be helpful for the PvE/O leader to be able to remove people from the party if they forget to leave after they finish if the party is continuing on for the session.

Whilst your point is valid. It has always been the case that people are free to come and go as they please in channels. If at this point they are only in the current chat for announcements, have no interest in the chat and are missing important info because of all the random conversations then if they want to leave they can. That way they are in a place that is beneficial to them and their interests.

I think this is a great idea, well done. I think the name of the bot channel might need some work shoping though, db gaming announcements is a bit confusing, maybe name it something along the lines of db gaming matches or something as its primary purpose is to be used to set up matches and track gaming. But just my two cents good job all the same.
