Why, hello there Muurians!
Now I know what your thinking “But TuQ, we aren’t supposed to be reading an HKM report for another 5 days!!”
Well, you are correct, however the powers that be (Ronnie and Arden) have decided that a new report schedule was in order. Not only am I releasing a report now on the 14th (I know it’s a tad late), but I also have the pleasure of sharing this report with our wonderful Aedile Tahiri!! That means exactly what you think it means, we will now be sharing one house report a month. While we are finding our footing with the shared report we may try and change things a bit, but I am excited for the new schedule and keeping things fresh.
So welcome to the first House Karness Muur Report brought to you by both myself (TuQ) and Tahiri!!
As always you are busting your butts and showing the rest of the DB what HKM has to offer!
This past month we had a TON of well deserved promotions and medals go out to our house members, it was definitely our pleasure to be able to recommend you all for these! Keep up the incredible work and please offer up a congratulations to everyone on this list!
Competitions, yes that is what I said, competitions. For this edition of Aedile moment, I wanted to talk with you all, especially those members who are new to the club and are still getting to know the site, about competition creation. I know it seems like a daunting and scary object, but believe me when I say that it isn’t too scary.
The first thing to do is come up with an idea, like for example when I first started doing competitions, I went with something I really liked to do, Ciphers! Now, even I was a bit scared as to how to go about making a competition, and also feared that maybe not everyone in the clan would like it. So I asked a summit member, my house Quaestor actually, for help and guidance. My Quaestor, along with my Master who was a BTL at the time, helped me to smooth over the rough edges and create a solid competition. And not to toot my own horn here, it did do quite well, even against my fears. It also helped that while it was going, my competition was hyped by the summit. Which is exactly what TuQ, the rest of the summit, and I would do with your competition.
So you’ve got your idea, and you’re ready to get started. Now comes the first of two hard parts. You have to decide what competition archetype best suits what you want to do. There are nine major competition archetypes, more information of which can be found by reading (and even doing) the Shadow Academy courses Leadership Competitions and Fiction Studies. Both of these courses have a wealth of info, especially the first course, cause that one goes over every competition type and how to set everything up. Another good reference center would be the MAA Policies wiki page. I will warn you now, that there are some special guidelines for Fiction and Graphics (click the links for more info) competitions. If there are other sort of questions about anything you don’t understand, let me, TuQ, the summit, or even Howie/Howlader, Wally/Marick (Voice) and Selika (Herald).
The next thing to do would be to set everything up!! Yay, so choose your archetype, next target unit, select the correct Crescent award for that level of competition, start and ending dates of the competition, competition details, prompt info and subscriber info (if it applies), and most importantly, don’t forget to think up a name for your competition. wink
One small point to add, there is also the option to have co-organizer help you in judging the entries. For most competitions, you won’t really need a co-organizer help you, but if it is a big Fiction comp or something that will possibly bring in a lot of entries, I would suggest you find someone.
Now you have all the information you need to start a competition of your own. Let us (the summit) know if we can help you members in any way, shape or form, and if you need a co-organizer let us know that too. We are more than happy to help guide you in making a fun, enjoyable and productive competition.
Oh I almost forgot, another perk of creating competitions is that it goes towards promotions and awards. Creating certain competitions also helps you, and those participating, advance in rank in the Brotherhood’s Societies. So whenever you get your creative juices flowing and come up with an awesome idea for a competition, let us know, and we can help you get a good start on building it up.
Well that’s all I’ve got, TuQ why don’t you take it from here.
