The Search for Answers

As night descends on the city of Menat Ombo, the receding arms of the pink sun create long dark fingers behind the buildings and trees. Steadily growing; slowly the city is cast into darkness. A breeze carries with it the last warm breath of the sun before settling below the horizon. The air is now cool. The city is now quiet.

Against the darkness, a bright light begins to shine at the edge of the city. Faint shouts and the sound of machinery echo across the landscape. Several kilometers away in a building captured during the Jedi liberation, Rhiann, while sitting in her favorite chair, notices the light and places a datapad she was reading on a small table next to her. She turns her head to look out the window before standing up and walking over to a set of double doors. Moving the security bolt to the “Unlock” position, Rhiann pulls open both doors allowing a gust of cool wind to flood the room. She takes a second to inhale the crisp air before stepping out onto the balcony. Leaning against the railing, she surveys the commotion.

Her focus is averted for a moment when she notices the presence of Gon enter the room. Placing his red hands on the railing beside her, he looks out across the city. Rhiann sighs.

“All those people. Who could have done this? The stadium is a symbol of peace, of resilience.”

“I know. We WILL find them. They WILL pay dearly for this.”

Rhiann turns to look at Gon. “We should be tearing the city apart looking for them. I hate how long this is taking. Why can’t we find that symbol?”

Gon smirks “Much like a duel, you can’t just jump into things. I’ve searched all records and have found nothing. Everything was wiped when Thuron took power. We have been reading all day. Come in, let’s get something to eat.”

Gon gave one more glance towards the city before turning around and walking inside. Frustrated, Rhiann slams her fists on the balcony then follows behind Gon.

Meanwhile…

Now that the rescue crews had the generators at full power, they were able to illuminate the scene of the incident. Construction workers and emergency personnel worked tirelessly throughout the day, and soon to be well into the night, uncovering the remains of the victims. Nothing was left intact. The scaffold laid twisted and broken much like the workers and equipment that had been on it. The wall the scaffold was attached to was now just a pile of broken duracrete. Lawyers from both Orion Engineering and Yissik Holdings surveyed the damage to determine how much the company would be liable. They knew that this would easily cost them millions if not billions of Credits in lost equipment, time and possibly even the contract to build the stadium. Losses that Yissik Holding CEO Cado Yissik, a Neimoidian, was not going to take lightly. He wanted answers and expected the Jedi to provide them.

Earlier that day…

Strike-Team Ooroo arrived shortly after hearing of the incident. Without hesitation they secured the scene, began analyzing the wreckage and interviewing witnesses. Revak and Rangel stood at the edge of a large pile of broken duracrete, durasteel and body parts. Revak looked at Rangel.

“We need to keep this under wraps. This can’t get out until we know what we are dealing with.”

Rangel nodded “Aye. I’ll have Ji tell the media that this appears to be an accident. Say only 1 dead and 11 injured to lessen the blow. We don’t need a city of scared people.”

“Agreed. I’ll have the Knights search for more explosives and the Disciples set up triage and medical tents. This was no accident so we must be cautious.”

Rangel took out his datapad and began marking notations on a map of the scene. He looked up at Revak. “Rhiann and Gon are looking up known criminals groups in the database. Sang, Krandon and Seridan have already began questioning witnesses and Kaayn, Cable and Telghar are sifting through the wreckage trying to find anything that could help us identify who is responsible.”

Seridan walked over to the two men. “I have a witness here who states that she saw a group of men wondering around the construction site, maybe an hour or so before the ex… um… accident.”

Rangel responded “Can she describe them? Anything…”

Rangel’s question was interrupted by Cable who was standing at the top of the pile, pointing at something below his feet.

“I think you guys should take a look at this” shouted the Geonosian in his rough voice.

Cable leapt from atop the wreckage holding a twisted piece of metal. He held it up to reveal a strange half burnt symbol.

“I have never seen this symbol before” he admitted. Rangel scanned it with his datapad and transmitted the image to Rhiann and Gon. “We’ll see if they can match it up. Pretty soon gentlemen, the hunt begins.”
