I’m sure by now you’ve all heard of the horrible event that took place at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington State yesterday morning. At approximately 10:30am, Jaylen Fryberg entered the cafeteria of his school, approached a table of students and fired several shots from a .40 caliber Beretta handgun. He then used the gun on himself. The shooter and a female student are dead. Four others are in critical condition. Our own Jason Hunter, a graduate of the school, reports the incident was “over a girl.”
It is a sad time for our nation when our youth turn to violence such as this. As Jedi, we must lookout for one another as well as those in our community. Incidents such as this aren’t gun, game or music issues. They are people issues. If you know someone who is going through a tough time, simply having a talk with them can uncover aspects about their emotional state. Certainly if your gut tells you that this person may hurt themselves of another, tell somebody. As an Officer, I can tell you that while you aren’t legally obligated to intervene, “If you see something, say something.” Although we can’t prevent every incident, we can help those who need us.
Jason, our hearts go out to your community and to the families and friends of the victims.
Additionally, I would like to send my condolences to the family of Corporal Nathan Cirillo, the Canadian soldier who was shot and killed while guarding the National War Memorial in Ottawa a few days ago. The shooter, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, formerly Joseph Paul Michael Bibeau was shot and killed by police while running towards the Parliament building after he shot Corporal Cirillo. He has a history of petty crimes, with possible links to mental illness.
Corporal Cirillo was transported to his home in Hamilton, Ontario on Friday where services will be held over the next few days.
Stay safe my friends.
